For technical officials working or training to work at Triathlon Canada and provincial triathlon events in the 2026 season. Covers registration, certification levels, revalidation, good standing, national event teams and pay.
Basic registration has four steps, according to Triathlon Canada:
Completing basic registration and the Safe Sport requirements puts you on the national registry of registered officials. Triathlon Canada's publications page lists a Basic Registration for Technical Officials document and an Officiating Pathway infographic: https://www.triathloncanada.com/publications/
Triathlon Canada uses two achievement markers:
Certification levels run from Provincial Technical Official (PTO-1 and PTO-2, run by the provincial sport organizations), to National Technical Official (run by Triathlon Canada), to the World Triathlon levels (CTO and ITO).
The Provincial Technical Official (PTO) level is run by the provincial sport organizations (PSOs), and most officials in Canada hold it.
Revalidation criteria are set by each PSO. At national championships, sector chiefs are PTO-2 or higher at the larger events and sector assistants are PTO or higher.

The National Technical Official level (also World Triathlon Level 1) is run by Triathlon Canada. According to the Triathlon Canada officials page, the steps are:
NTOs revalidate every four years through the World Triathlon NTO online recertification.
World Triathlon levels: World Triathlon Level 2 (Continental Technical Official, CTO) and Level 3 A and B (International Technical Official, ITO) are managed entirely by World Triathlon, including course scheduling, eligibility and revalidation criteria. World Triathlon designation holders are contacted by World Triathlon.
Revalidation (all levels):
Retirement: when an NTO or higher retires from officiating, they are removed from the World Triathlon database and cannot make assignment requests. A retired official is not reinstated until the annual submissions are made to World Triathlon for the following season.

To be eligible for any assignment, an official must be "in good standing" with both their provincial sport organization (PSO) and Triathlon Canada. That requires:
Deadlines:
Logs are no longer required to establish good standing. They are used only in the selection process for Major Games.

According to the 2026 National Technical Official Handbook, for national events:
To be considered for a leadership role at a national event, send an expression of interest to officials@triathloncanada.com. Leadership roles are selected in February each year, after the annual re-certification process is complete.
At international events in Canada, World Triathlon or the Pan American Triathlon Confederation assigns the TD and aTD, and the TD must be an international technical official. Officials assigned by those bodies may not also hold national championship leadership positions on the same event weekend.

The handbook sets these target teams (leaders plus technical team) for national championships:
| Event | Leaders | Technical team | Sector chiefs | Sector assistants |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elite National Championship (includes Junior, U23, Para) | 3 | 15 to 17 | 10 (PTO2+) | 7 (PTO+) |
| Combined Elite and Age Group Nationals | 4 | 15 to 17 | 10 (PTO2+) | 7 (PTO+) |
| Large Age Group Nationals (standard or sprint) | 3 | 10 to 12 | 6 (PTO2+) | 6 (PTO+) |
| Small Age Group Nationals (cross or winter triathlon) | 2 | 4 | 4 (PTO+) | none listed |
Leaders are the Technical Delegate (NTO or higher), the Assistant Technical Delegate (NTO or higher, not listed at small age group nationals) and the Head Referee (NTO or higher). The Combined event has two Technical Delegates, one for Elite and one for Age Group. Teams should not exceed these sizes without a clear rationale, and variations for course layout or layered competitions are decided case by case.

National events are primarily officiated by technical officials from the host provincial sport organization (PSO). Triathlon Canada runs an "out of region" (OOR) program so some officials can work outside their home region:
For international events in Canada, officials must apply to the Triathlon Canada Technical Committee and normally must be NTOs, CTOs or ITOs in good standing. PTOs may be considered for supporting roles if spots are available; the PSOs pass on the invitation, and the PTO sends an expression of interest to officials@triathloncanada.com.
