Rider's Guide to Cycling South Africa Youth Racing U11 to U17 2026

Under section 12.1 of the Cycling SA Road Cycling Handbook 2026, the maximum road race distances are the same for boys and girls:

• These limits are strictly enforced (section 12.2).
• The National Youth Championships use the same maximum distances (section 16.1).
• A race longer than your limit counts as an endurance event: you may ride it only in the Open category, with no podium for your age group (section 12.4).

Under section 12.3 of the Cycling SA Road Cycling Handbook 2026, the maximum time trial distances are the same for boys and girls:

Bikes: U15 and younger may not use time trial bikes or time trial equipment in time trials (section 5.2).

Under sections 5 and 6 of the Cycling SA Road Cycling Handbook 2026:

• Wheel depth: youth riders' wheels may be no deeper than 50 mm, and all wheels must be on the UCI's List of Approved Wheels.
• Gears: gear checks have been removed for all age groups, so there is no gear restriction check for youth riders.
• Bike types: road bikes are standard. Mountain bikes and BMX bikes are allowed in road races.
• Time trial bikes and equipment are not allowed in road races, and not allowed in time trials for U15 and younger.
• Handlebar ends must be plugged, not just covered with tape.

Under sections 7 and 8 of the Cycling SA Road Cycling Handbook 2026:

• Helmet: a standard helmet without a visor.
• Coverage: you must be clothed from the neck to at least mid-thigh, and your jersey must have sleeves extending beyond the shoulder.
• Registered colours: the rule that riders must wear the registered design and colours of the school, academy, club, team, region or province they represent applies to licensed riders and competitive members from Junior and older.
• Not representing anyone: riders who don't represent a school, academy, club, team, region, province or country must wear predominantly plain clothing with no lettering apart from the manufacturer's mark.
• Day membership holders may wear any suitable clothing.
• Accessories must be securely fastened, and anything not essential for racing removed.
• No glass or any other non-shatterproof bottle or container.

It isn't guaranteed. Under sections 17.4 and 18.4 of the Cycling SA Road Cycling Handbook 2026, at National Classics (Category A) and Regional Mass Participation events (Categories B to D):

• U17: a separate U17 race category should exist wherever possible.
• Younger youth categories: youth race categories are encouraged, within the youth distance limits.
• A youth race may be held on the main route within the allowed distance, or as a separate criterium.
• Categories can be combined, subject to the distance restrictions.
• The President Commissaire may allow support vehicles for U17 and youth races, depending on the course, number of riders and rider safety.

Day membership: a rider on a day membership can't race in the specified age categories or win prize money at A, B or C category events (section 9.7.4), so you need a Cycling SA membership to race your age category there.

Only in the open category, and without an age-group podium. Under section 12.4 of the Cycling SA Road Cycling Handbook 2026:

• Road races, time trials and team time trials longer than the maximum category distances are classed as endurance events, with no maximum distance.
• If an endurance event is longer than the maximum distance for your category, riders U19 and younger may ride it only in the Open category, and there are no podiums for their age categories.

Outside endurance events, the maximum race distances are strictly enforced (section 12.2).

Under sections 9, 13 and 14 of the Cycling SA Road Cycling Handbook 2026:

What you need

• A Cycling SA full membership. Youth membership is issued to U17 riders and younger. You don't need a Full Racing Licence (that is required only from Junior upwards).
• You must be a member of a club or academy.
• Day licences and day memberships are not accepted at any National Championship.

Your category

• You ride the age category on your licence at every event, including Provincial and SA Championships.

When

• The National Youth Championships may be held as part of the National Elite, U23 and Junior Road and Time Trial Championships (held each year by the end of February at the latest), or as a separate event, as decided by Cycling SA's Executive Board, Road Commission and Youth, Transformation and Development Commission.

Distances

• The same youth maximum distances apply as at other road races and time trials (U11 20 km, U13 30 km, U15 60 km, U17 80 km in road races at National and Provincial Championships).

Under section 15.3 of the Cycling SA Road Cycling Handbook 2026, for youth boys' and girls' road races and time trials:

• Each age category needs at least 5 starters to have its own classified results.
• With fewer than 5 starters, the category is combined with another to form a 4-year category (for example U13 and U15 together).
• If there are still fewer than 5 starters in the own or combined category, medals but no jerseys are awarded, whatever the number of entries:

Not the standard national stage races. Under section 20 of the Cycling SA Road Cycling Handbook 2026:

• Road stage races (national tours) are open to Elite, U23, Junior and Veteran riders holding Full Racing Licences. Youth categories (U11 to U17) aren't included.
• Youth stage racing and youth festivals have their own regulations, set by Cycling SA's Youth, Transformation and Development Commission, not by the road stage race rules.

No. Under section 41 of the Cycling SA Road Cycling Handbook 2026:

• E-Road Bike events are open only to riders aged 19 and over (including masters categories), so youth riders can't enter them.
• Unless you are entered in an e-bike category, you may not use an e-bike on any part of the course, including during your warm-up. A rider found using an e-bike for racing in a racing category will be disqualified, fined and sanctioned.
