For golfers of all ages with, or getting, a Handicap Index in Canada under the Golf Canada 2024 Rules of Handicapping (in effect January 2024). Covers Handicap Index calculation, acceptable scores, posting, maximum hole scores, caps, exceptional scores and Course Handicap.
Under Rule 5.2b of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping, once you have at least 20 scores your Handicap Index is the average of the lowest 8 of your most recent 20 Score Differentials, rounded to the nearest tenth. The differentials include any exceptional-score or Committee-review adjustments.
Golf Canada notes that your Handicap Index:
If your Handicap Index calculates as a negative figure, it is a plus handicap. Players with a plus handicap are encouraged to prefix it with a plus sign (+). With fewer than 20 scores, a table in Rule 5.2a decides how many differentials are used and what adjustment applies.
Under Rules 1.4, 4.5 and 5.2a of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping:
| Score Differentials | Used | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Lowest 1 | -2.0 |
| 4 | Lowest 1 | -1.0 |
| 5 | Lowest 1 | 0 |
| 6 | Average of lowest 2 | -1.0 |
| 7 or 8 | Average of lowest 2 | 0 |
| 9 to 11 | Average of lowest 3 | 0 |
| 12 to 14 | Average of lowest 4 | 0 |
| 15 or 16 | Average of lowest 5 | 0 |
| 17 or 18 | Average of lowest 6 | 0 |
| 19 | Average of lowest 7 | 0 |
| 20 | Average of lowest 8 | 0 |
The result is rounded to the nearest tenth. An initial Handicap Index above 54.0 is set at 54.0. The Handicap Committee may modify an initial Handicap Index up or down, to a maximum of 54.0, based on additional evidence of your demonstrated ability.
Under Rule 5.1 of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping, an 18-hole Score Differential is:
(113 ÷ Slope Rating) x (adjusted gross score - Course Rating - PCC adjustment)
It is rounded to the nearest tenth, with .5 rounded up. The PCC adjustment ranges from -1.0 to +3.0 (see the PCC question). Your adjusted gross score is your gross score with any hole scores above the maximum (net double bogey, or par + 5 before you have a Handicap Index) reduced to that maximum.
Example: an adjusted gross score of 85 on tees with Course Rating 71.0 and Slope Rating 125, with a PCC adjustment of 0, gives 113 ÷ 125 x (85 - 71.0) = 0.904 x 14 = 12.7.
Under Rule 5.6 of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping, the PCC is a daily statistical procedure that checks whether playing conditions on a course differed from normal enough to need an adjustment. It compares the scores submitted that day against expected scoring patterns. Course Ratings assume normal conditions, but difficulty can vary with course conditions, weather and course set-up.
Posting your score on the day of play means it is included in that day's PCC. A score posted later still gets the PCC adjustment for the day it was played.
Under Rule 2.1 of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping, a score is acceptable only if the round was:

Under Rules 2.2, 3.2 and 5.1 of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping:
Under Rule 6.1a of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping, your Course Handicap for an 18-hole round is:
Handicap Index x (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating - Par)
Round to the nearest whole number as the final step (.5 rounds up). Use the Slope Rating, Course Rating and par of the tees you are playing. For example, a Handicap Index of 15.0 on tees with a Slope Rating of 125, Course Rating 71.2 and par 72 gives 15.0 x 1.106 + (71.2 - 72) = 16.6 - 0.8 = 15.8, which rounds to 16.
Under Rules 5.7 and 5.8 of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping, upward movement of your Handicap Index is limited by comparing it with your Low Handicap Index.
The caps start to take effect only after your Low Handicap Index has been established. The maximum Handicap Index is 54.0 for all players (Rule 5.3).
Under Rule 5.9 of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping, when a Score Differential is much lower than your Handicap Index in effect when the round was played, your Handicap Index is reduced automatically:
| Strokes the Score Differential is lower than your Handicap Index | Reduction |
|---|---|
| 7.0 to 9.9 | -1.0 |
| 10.0 or more | -2.0 |
Under Rules 1.4, 5.4 and 5.5 of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping:
