Under Rules 2.2, 3.2 and 5.1 of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping:
- 9-hole round: all 9 holes must be played, over 9 holes with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating. A 9-hole Score Differential is combined with your expected score over 9 holes to create an 18-hole Score Differential, so it can affect your Handicap Index straight away. Fewer than 9 holes is not acceptable.
- 10 to 17 holes: an 18-hole score needs at least 10 holes played, and the reason for not finishing must be valid. Valid reasons include fading light or weather stopping play, injury or illness, a match finishing early, a hole being closed by the Committee, and any other reason the Committee considers reasonable. If valid, your expected score is used for the holes not played. Golf Canada says to post these hole by hole and enter a zero for each unplayed hole.
- Invalid reasons: weather that does not stop play, skipping a hole because it usually gives you trouble, or stopping early to avoid a high or low score. The score is not acceptable, and the Handicap Committee may post a penalty score if it decides you acted to gain an unfair scoring advantage.
- Started but not holed out: a hole counts as played once started. Post the most likely score for a hole you did not finish or where a stroke was conceded.
