Under Rule 5.2b of the 2024 Rules of Handicapping, once you have at least 20 scores your Handicap Index is the average of the lowest 8 of your most recent 20 Score Differentials, rounded to the nearest tenth. The differentials include any exceptional-score or Committee-review adjustments.
Golf Canada notes that your Handicap Index:
- Updates after each new round and applies at any course or tee, because it is converted to a Course Handicap for the tees you play.
- Has a maximum of 54.0 for all players.
- Is subject to the soft and hard caps, which limit increases compared with your Low Handicap Index.
If your Handicap Index calculates as a negative figure, it is a plus handicap. Players with a plus handicap are encouraged to prefix it with a plus sign (+). With fewer than 20 scores, a table in Rule 5.2a decides how many differentials are used and what adjustment applies.
