For cross-country ski racers in the U12, U14, U16, U18, U20, U23 and Senior categories racing in the 2026-27 season under Nordiq Canada. Covers age categories, 2026-27 youth changes, race licences, racing up, event tiers, seeding, race distances, wax and fluoro rules, entry fees, national championship eligibility and appeals.
Nordiq Canada's Competition Model sets these racing categories and ages:
| Category | Age |
|---|---|
| U8 | 6-7 |
| U10 | 8-9 |
| U12 | 10-11 |
| U14 | 12-13 |
| U16 | 14-15 |
| U18 | 16-17 |
| U20 | 18-19 |
| U23 | 20-22 |
| Senior | 23 and older |
At Tier 1 events you must register in your date-of-birth age category. Senior, U23 and U20 together make up the Open category.
Year of birth: the latest published year-of-birth table is the one in the 2025-26 Nationals package: U16 2010 and 2011, U18 2008 and 2009, U20 2006 and 2007, U23 2003 to 2005, Senior 2002 and before. The Competition Model also encourages organizers to show year of birth on results and to recognize athletes by year of birth in the younger categories.

At Tier 1 events, "racing up" (entering an age category older than your own) is not permitted, with one exception: for the 2026/2027 season only, a second-year U18 athlete may race up to U20 at the Junior/U23 trials.
Nordiq Canada's youth sport development update for 2026-27 also says racing up is restricted to athletes in U20 and above categories, with specific exceptions for pathways such as World Junior Trials and NCAA eligibility requirements.
Under the Competition Model, athletes also cannot "race down" into a younger category.

Nordiq Canada groups events into tiers (definitions from the Nordiq Canada Events Primer, 2024-25 edition, the most recent published):
Licence needed at a Tier 1 event (2026-2030 Tier 1 package, by the category you race in): Open and U20 need a FIS licence; U18 and U16 need a Nordiq Canada Race Licence; U14 and below are not eligible.

Seeding: Canada Points List (CPL) points, distance or sprint as appropriate, are used for seeding all events except the final day of a pursuit start. Changes to verified seeding lists are only considered by the jury in exceptional circumstances.
Combined categories: where categories share courses and distances, it is recommended to combine Senior, U23 and U20 (Open), and U18 and U16. The combined group is seeded as one group, but awards and prizes are still given for each category and results show both combined and separate category results. The jury makes the final decision on combining.
Sprints: you must register in your date-of-birth age category. The Open category is Senior, U23 and U20. In Open sprints, round 1 is the top 30 from the qualifier regardless of age category, and round 2 is the next best 30 U20 athletes only (places 31 to 60). A U20 who makes the top 30 in the qualifier is placed in the Open category.

Nordiq Canada's Competition Model sets recommended distances for each racing category, based on a targeted race duration. The Tier 1 package says formats and distances for categories other than Open are agreed in line with this model. These are guidelines for organizers, not fixed distances, and distances are adapted to race-day course conditions.
| Category (age) | Sprints | Distance races |
|---|---|---|
| U12 (10-11) | 100 m or under 20 seconds; 100-300 m skills race | 1-3 km (5-20 min) |
| U14 (12-13) | 1-2 x 100 m or under 20 seconds; 2-3 x 200-400 m skills race | 3-10 km (10-30 min) |
| U16 (14-15) | 2 x 0.1 km (or 20 seconds or less); 4 x 0.8-1 km | 3-10 km (7-40 min); team relays or prologue 3 x 2-3 km |
| U18 (16-17) | 6-7 x 0.8-1.0 km | 3-30 km (7-90 min); team relays or prologue 2-3 x 2-4 km |

For the 2026/2027 season the per-competition entry fee at a Nordiq Canada Tier 1 event is a maximum of $50 CDN + GST. Fees can exceed this only with the approval of the Nordiq Canada Director of Events, for example when an independent venue charges trail fees to the organizing committee.

The most recent published Nationals technical package is for the 2025-26 season (2026 Nordiq Canada Ski Nationals). It requires every competitor to:
U20 and older athletes also need a FIS licence for the Continental Cup (COC) Open races.
Medals: to be eligible for Nationals medals and aggregate awards you must hold a Nordiq Canada Race Licence and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Athletes with a foreign FIS licence, or without citizenship or permanent residence, have partial eligibility only (event or sponsor prizes, but no aggregate points). The 2026-2030 Tier 1 package keeps the same medal eligibility rule.
New for 2026-27: U16 becomes the youngest category allowed at the National Ski Championships. Limited exemptions may be considered for exceptional U14 athletes with divisional support.
