Nordiq Canada's Competition Model sets recommended distances for each racing category, based on a targeted race duration. The Tier 1 package says formats and distances for categories other than Open are agreed in line with this model. These are guidelines for organizers, not fixed distances, and distances are adapted to race-day course conditions.
| Category (age) | Sprints | Distance races |
|---|---|---|
| U12 (10-11) | 100 m or under 20 seconds; 100-300 m skills race | 1-3 km (5-20 min) |
| U14 (12-13) | 1-2 x 100 m or under 20 seconds; 2-3 x 200-400 m skills race | 3-10 km (10-30 min) |
| U16 (14-15) | 2 x 0.1 km (or 20 seconds or less); 4 x 0.8-1 km | 3-10 km (7-40 min); team relays or prologue 3 x 2-3 km |
| U18 (16-17) | 6-7 x 0.8-1.0 km | 3-30 km (7-90 min); team relays or prologue 2-3 x 2-4 km |
At Tier 1 events (2026-2030 package):
- Team relays: 2 classic legs then 2 free technique legs, teams of 2 men and 2 women. Open is 4 x 5 km; U18 and U16 are each 4 x 2.5 km.
- U16/U18 team sprints: 2 x 2 laps of about 0.75 km. Open team sprints are 2 x 4 laps of about 0.75 km.
