What do I need to know as a scorer in Year 6-7 boys or Year 8-9 girls MJCC Stage 2 cricket? Scorebook and PlayHQ duties, retirement and bowling limits, extras, and recording results.
Each team provides one competent scorer, who is treated as a match official responsible for accurately recording the match (General Rules 3.2).
Scores, including team runs and wickets, extras by type and each player's balls faced, must be in PlayHQ within 72 hours of the end of play.
The home team provides a scorer's table and two chairs (General Rules 2.6 and Stage 2 Match Day Rules 3.1), along with two sets of stumps and bails, chalk or tape for the creases, a measuring tape or premeasured rope for the boundary and at least 25 plastic cones.
Keep the scorer's table at least 3 metres from the boundary: there must be a minimum of 3 metres between any solid structure (tents, scorers, spectators, chairs) and the boundary.
The team list for both sides must be available to the match officials before the fixtured start time. PlayHQ and the Cricket Australia PlayCricket app can be used to share it.
General Rules 3.2(d): if a scorer notices a breach of the bowling or batting rules, they must immediately interrupt play (they must not wait until the end of the over) and:
Scorers are treated as match officials. At a minimum they should know the umpire signals such as wide, the types of dismissal, the batting retirement rules and the number of overs bowled per player.
Ball limits (5.2): a batter retires immediately on facing the limit, and wides and no balls count.
| Match | Players in team | Retire after |
|---|---|---|
| 20 overs | any | 20 balls |
| 30 overs | 9 or fewer | 30 balls |
| 30 overs | 10 or more | 25 balls |
How to record:
Stage 2 Match Day Rules 6.2 and 6.3:
20-over match
30-over match
Part overs: if a bowler is injured mid-over, another player completes it and the normal restrictions apply to both. A bowler who is not allowed to continue after repeated waist or shoulder-high no balls also has the over completed by a different bowler, and the part-over counts as an over for each.
From the umpire signals and Stage 2 Match Day Rules:
Ball counts: regardless of wides or no balls, every delivery counts in the batter's ball count towards their retirement limit. An over is 6 balls, but wides and no balls are re-bowled up to a maximum of 8 balls in an over.
PlayHQ requires extras to be entered by type for each innings.
An innings ends at the first of the following (Stage 2 Match Day Rules 1.3):
All out: a team of 9 or more players is all out after 8 wickets. With fewer than 9 players, the team is all out when the number of players less one have been dismissed (for example, 7 players: 6 wickets). Retired batters are not dismissals.
Second innings: the team batting second gets the same number of overs as the team batting first, unless the first team was all out, in which case it gets the full allocation. If time is called and the second team has faced fewer overs than the first, the result is decided by the scores at the same number of overs.
General Rules 2.4 and 2.5:
General Rules 4.3:
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win | 10 |
| Tie or draw | 5 each |
| Win by forfeit | 13 |
| Batting bonus | 0.01 per run (1 point per 100 runs) |
| Bowling bonus | 0.2 per wicket (2 points per 10 wickets) |
To count as a result in a wet or shortened match, each team must bowl and bat at least 50 per cent of the allocated overs (unless all out), or the match is a draw. Play lost to weather or the state of the ground reduces play by 1 over for every 4 minutes lost. If play has not started within one hour of the scheduled start, the match is abandoned and declared a draw.
