General Rules 3.2(d): if a scorer notices a breach of the bowling or batting rules, they must immediately interrupt play (they must not wait until the end of the over) and:
- Advise the umpires that a player is about to breach a bowling or batting rule.
- If the breach is in the bowling, the over is completed by another bowler who will not breach any bowling rule.
- If the breach is in the batting, the batter must retire immediately.
Scorers are treated as match officials. At a minimum they should know the umpire signals such as wide, the types of dismissal, the batting retirement rules and the number of overs bowled per player.
