What do I need to know when my Under 12 to Under 16 child (school Years 5-10) starts competing in athletics in England? The new age groups, which events and how many per day, false starts, registration and race distances under the UKA Rules 2026.
From 1 April 2026, the UKA Rules for Competition moved young athletes to even-numbered age groups:
| Old age groups | New age groups (from 1 April 2026) |
|---|---|
| Under 13 | Under 14 |
| Under 15 | Under 16 |
| Under 17 | Under 18 |
| Under 20 | Under 20 (unchanged) |
Below these, England Athletics uses Under 10 and Under 12 for primary school-aged children. Above, Seniors are 20 and over, and Masters start at 35.
England Athletics' stated aims are to simplify age-group dates, support long-term athlete development, and mean athletes are at the top of their age group in non-exam school years. The new groups applied from the 2026 track and field season onwards.
Under UKA Rule TR3 S1, in England (and Wales) the age group for athletes under 18 is set by their age on 31 August at the end of the competition year, for track and field, race walking, road running and cross country.
| Age group | Age on 31 August | School years |
|---|---|---|
| Under 12 | 10 or 11 | Years 5 and 6 |
| Under 14 | 12 or 13 | Years 7 and 8 |
| Under 16 | 14 or 15 | Years 9 and 10 |
| Under 18 | 16 or 17 | Years 11 and 12 |
For the 2026/27 competition year (1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027), the date is 31 August 2027. Hill and trail running use age on 31 December instead, and Scotland and Northern Ireland use 31 December for all disciplines.
Yes, but outside the formal UKA Rules for Competition, which only apply from Under 14 upwards.
In England, Under 10 covers school years 3 and 4, and Under 12 covers years 5 and 6.
Under UKA Rule TR3 S2, Under 14s (aged 12 or 13 on 31 August in the competition year):
Under UKA Rule TR3 S2, Under 16s (aged 14 or 15 on 31 August in the competition year):
UKA Rule TR3 S2 limits young athletes at a single athletics meeting:
| Under 14 | Under 16 | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum events per day (not combined events) | 4, and if doing 4, one must be a relay | 4, of which no more than 3 individual; the 4th must be a relay |
| If a walk is included | Maximum 3 running or walking events (including relays) | Maximum 3 running or walking events (including relays) |
| Middle distance | Only one race between 600m and one mile per day | Only one event between 600m and 3000m per day |
| Combined event (e.g. pentathlon) | No other event that day | No other event that day |
Athletes in a track walk may not also run a track event of 600m or more on the same day.
Only one age group up, with limits (UKA Rule TR3 S2):
Under 12s can't compete against Under 14s. UKA says this would not be appropriate because the restrictions that would be needed aren't in the rules.
Not for the first one. UKA Rule TR16 S2 gives Under 14s and Under 16s (and everyone in Open Graded races that U14s or U16s may enter) a warning first:
This is more lenient than the senior rule, where any athlete responsible for a false start is disqualified straight away.
A false start means starting after taking the final set position but before the gun: in a crouch start, a hand or foot losing contact with the ground or blocks; in a standing start, a foot losing contact with the ground.
Under UKA Rule G2 S1:
Individual (non-team) runners in road races are excluded from the registration rule, but must be registered to score for a club team.
UKA Rule TR3 S4 sets recommended distances for age-group races and maximum distances by age on the day:
| Age group | Cross country (recommended) | Road and multi-terrain (recommended) | Maximum, any terrain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 12 (guidance) | 3km | 3km max | 3km at age 10, 5km at age 11 |
| Under 14 | 4km | 6km | 6km |
| Under 16 | 5km | 8km | 8km at age 14, 12km at age 15 |
parkrun is a timed run rather than a race, so it is outside the UKA Rules for Competition.
