What do I need to know to coach high school (grades 9-12) wrestling under 2026-27 NFHS rules? Weight control and minimum weight, weigh-ins, skin conditions, injuries and concussions, coach conduct and scoring.
NFHS Rule 1-5-1: every state high school association must run a weight-control program that discourages excessive weight cutting and wide swings in weight. It should involve the wrestler, parents/guardians, an appropriate health care professional and the coach in setting the minimum certified weight class. The ideal program sets that minimum through:
NFHS Rule 1-5-2 requires the state program to include:
Each state sets its own assessment window, retest rules and descent-plan details. For example, in Texas a wrestler who fails the hydration test must wait 24 hours before being reassessed.
From the 2026-27 season, the minimum body fat percentage for female wrestlers rose from 12% to 19% (NFHS Rules 1-5-1 and 1-5-2). The boys' minimum stays at 7%.
What it means for your girls:
Why: the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee, backed by the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and using research from the National Wrestling Coaches Association, found that peer-reviewed data supports 19% as a safer margin for girls trying to reach a lower weight class.
Weigh-ins (4-5-1, updated for 2026-27):
Weight classes: each state chooses a 12-, 13- or 14-class set for boys and for girls, and can't switch during the season. The 14-class sets are:
A wrestler's minimum weight class is set by the state weight-control program's body fat assessment. Some states add a growth allowance during the season (for example, Texas UIL adds 2 pounds from December 27).
NFHS Rule 4-2-3: if the referee or a coach suspects a wrestler has a communicable skin disease or another condition that makes participation inadvisable, the coach must provide current written documentation from a physician stating that:
When: furnish it at the weigh-in for the dual meet or tournament. The only exception is if a designated on-site meet physician examines the wrestler right before or after weigh-ins.
Important:
Use the NFHS skin lesion form or your state association's version. It records the diagnosis, the location and number of lesions, the medication, the treatment start date, the earliest return date, the form's expiration date and the physician's signature. Some states limit who may sign it.
State associations' physician release forms for wrestling with skin lesions (built on the NFHS model form) list these minimum treatment guidelines. The examining physician makes the final call.
| Condition | Minimum before return |
|---|---|
| Bacterial (impetigo, boils) | Oral antibiotic for 3 days. All lesions scabbed over, no oozing or discharge, and no new lesions in the last 48 hours. If new lesions keep appearing or draining after 72 hours, consider CA-MRSA and extend oral antibiotics to 10 days or until all lesions are scabbed, whichever is later. |
| Herpes, first episode (herpes gladiatorum) | At least 10 days of treatment, or 14 days if there's fever or swollen lymph nodes |
| Herpes, recurrent outbreak | At least 120 hours (5 full days) of oral antiviral, with no new lesions and all lesions scabbed over |
| Tinea (ringworm) | Oral or topical treatment for 72 hours on skin, 14 days on the scalp |
| Scabies, head lice | 24 hours after appropriate topical treatment |
| Conjunctivitis (pink eye) | 24 hours of medication and no discharge |
| Molluscum contagiosum | 24 hours after curettage |
Non-contagious conditions such as eczema and psoriasis don't need treatment before returning. Once a lesion is no longer contagious, it may be covered so the wrestler can participate.
| Time-out | Allowance |
|---|---|
| Injury time | Two injury time-outs per match, no more than 1:30 in total |
| Blood time | 5 minutes cumulative. If the bleeding isn't controlled in that time, the opponent wins by default. Cleanup after bleeding stops isn't counted. |
| Recovery time | 2 minutes if your wrestler is injured or (new for 2026-27) bleeding because of the opponent's illegal hold, unnecessary roughness, unsportsmanlike conduct or neutral-position false start. Not taken from injury or blood time. If your wrestler can't continue, they win by default. |
| HNC evaluation | Up to 5 minutes for a head, neck or cervical column injury, only if a physician or certified athletic trainer is present. A second HNC injury in the same match is a default. |
Concussion (8-2-4a): a wrestler showing signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion (loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion, balance problems) must be immediately removed and may not return until cleared by an appropriate health care professional.
State laws and state association concussion protocols may add further return-to-play steps.
Approaching the mat (7-5-2): only during a charged time-out (injury, blood, recovery, HNC or referee's time-out) or at the end of the match.
Questioning a call: you may ask the referee to come to the scorer's table about a possible misapplication of a rule. If you question the referee's judgment or the application of a rule and the referee doesn't change the call, you're charged with coach misconduct (6-6-6).
At tournaments: two team personnel may sit in the chairs at the edge of the mat (2-2-2).
Coach misconduct consequences were an NFHS point of emphasis for 2025-26.
The NFHS makes the head coach responsible for making sure each wrestler is properly equipped, in proper uniform, and has skin, nails and hair suitable for competition.
Key rules:
Dual meets (since 2025-26): the starting weight class is set by a random draw (held before weigh-ins), or the meet goes from lightest to heaviest. In multi-dual events, each later dual starts one weight class above the previous round's start.
Some state associations add their own limits on top of these. For example, Texas (UIL) also requires at least 30 minutes of rest between matches.
| Move | Points |
|---|---|
| Takedown | 3 (since 2024-25) |
| Reversal | 2 |
| Escape | 1 |
| Near fall | 2, 3 or 4, equal to the seconds near-fall criteria are held (2, 3 or 4) |
| Near fall when the defender is injured, indicates injury or bleeds after a 4-point near fall | 5 |
