The NFHS makes the head coach responsible for making sure each wrestler is properly equipped, in proper uniform, and has skin, nails and hair suitable for competition.
Key rules:
- Braces: a wrestler with braces or another orthodontic device must wear a tooth and mouth protector that covers the teeth and all of the device (upper and lower if both have devices). It needs a biting-surface and lip-side portion. Custom fitting is recommended. A state association may require mouth protectors for all wrestlers.
- Undergarments: all wrestlers must wear suitable undergarments that completely cover the buttocks and groin. Girls' breasts must be completely covered and supported.
- No wearable tech: no video cameras or audio devices (including microphones) during matches. Hearing aids are allowed.
- No bands or sleeves: wristbands, sweatbands, bicep bands and arm or leg sleeves aren't allowed unless the sleeve contains a pad (since 2025-26).
- Uniform marks from July 1, 2027: school name, nickname, logo, mascot, weight class and/or wrestler's name are allowed. Manufacturer marks are limited to 2¼ square inches, once per garment.
