What do I need to know as a team manager or coach on a senior outdoor hockey bench in South Africa in 2027? FIH Rules of Hockey 2027: squad size, the bench, kit and goalkeepers, substitutions, injuries, the captain, and cards for players and team officials.
Squad (FIH Rules of Hockey 2027, Terminology and Rule 2.1): a team has up to 16 people: a maximum of 11 players on the field and up to 5 substitutes. Competition regulations may change the maximum number of players and substitutes, and the number and roles of team officials.
Which rules: the SA Hockey Association plays to the FIH Rules of Hockey. The 2027 edition is effective for international hockey from 1 November 2026, and national associations decide when it starts domestically. This guide follows the 2027 edition. Changes that matter most on the bench:
Default match length (Rule 5.1): four 15-minute quarters, 2-minute breaks after quarters 1 and 3, and a 10-minute half-time, unless the competition's regulations set other timings.
FIH Rules 1.11, 2.5 and 2.6 (2027):
Substitutions take place within 3 m of the centre-line on the team bench side.
FIH Rule 4 (2027). Competition regulations and SA Hockey or provincial regulations may add requirements on clothing and advertising.
Field players:
Goalkeepers:
Captain: a distinctive arm-band or similar on the upper arm or shoulder, or over the top of a sock.
Sticks: smooth, no rough or sharp parts, must pass through a 51 mm ring, and have a maximum bow of 25 mm.
FIH Rules 2.2, 2.3 and 10 (2027). A team plays either:
Switching between these options must be done as a substitution.
Goalkeeper substitutions (revised for 2027):
On the field: the goalkeeper can't take part in play outside their own 23-metre area (except to take a penalty stroke) and must wear headgear at all times except when taking a stroke.
FIH Rule 2.3 (2027):
The captain is responsible for substitutions being carried out correctly.
FIH Rules 2.4, 2.5, 2.7 and 6.5 (2027):
Players on or off the field stay under the umpires' authority for the whole match, including intervals.
FIH Rule 2.1 (2027): no more than eleven players per team on the field at any time.
If a team has too many:
How to avoid it (Rule 2.3): a substitute may only come on after the player being replaced has left the field, and both must use the area within 3 m of the centre-line on the bench side. The captain is responsible for making sure substitutions are done correctly.
FIH Rule 3 (2027):
Cards given to the captain for these team offences don't count towards the 2027 rule that a player can't receive a second card of the same colour. So the captain could still get a second green or yellow card.
The toss (Rule 6.1): the team winning the toss chooses either which goal to attack in the first half, or to start the first two quarters with the centre pass. The other team gets the other choice.
New in the FIH Rules of Hockey 2027 (Rule 14): umpires can give personal penalties to team officials (head coach, manager, physio, doctor and anyone else authorised to sit on the bench), treating misconduct the same way as a player's.
| Card | Suspension | Effect on the team |
|---|---|---|
| Caution | None | None |
| Green | 2 minutes of playing time | Team plays one player short |
| Yellow | 5 or 10 minutes of playing time | Team plays one player short |
| Red | Rest of the match | The official must leave the field and its surrounding area, and the team plays one player short for the rest of the match |
Competition regulations may add further consequences for a red card beyond the match.
