What does my child need to know to show jump at Pony Club rallies and competitions as a member (up to age 25)? Hats and tagging, body protectors, PC70 to PC110 levels, dress, spurs and whips, faults, falls and concussion.
Members must always wear a protective hat when mounted, including at prize-giving, with the chinstrap fastened and adjusted so the hat can't move in a fall. The 2026 Pony Club hat rule is unchanged from 2025.
| Hat standard | Safety mark needed |
|---|---|
| Snell E2016 or E2021 | Official Snell label and number |
| PAS 015:2011 | BSI Kitemark or Inspec IC mark |
| (BS) EN 1384:2023 | BSI Kitemark or Inspec IC mark |
| VG1 | BSI Kitemark or Inspec IC mark |
| ASTM F1163 (2015 or 2023) | SEI mark |
| AS/NZS 3838:2006 | SAI Global mark |
A hat labelled with an older standard is still allowed if it also carries at least one of the standards above.
Also:
Pony Club Branches and Centres appoint officials to check hats and fit a Pony Club hat tag to each hat that meets the hat rule.
A yellow hat tag shows a member has passed the C+ Riding Test or the Spurs Test and can wear spurs.
When a body protector is compulsory
A body protector is compulsory for all Pony Club cross-country riding (including arena eventing) and pony racing, in training or competition. It must meet the BETA 2018 Level 3 standard (blue and black label).
Show jumping and general riding
Choosing whether to wear a body protector is up to members and their parents. If one is worn:
Air jackets
Unless the schedule says otherwise, any member can enter any Pony Club show jumping competition. These eligibility rules apply to Area competitions and the Championships:
| Level | First round / second round | Who can enter |
|---|---|---|
| PC70 | 70cm / 75cm | Riders 13 and under on 1 January |
| PC70 Plus (individuals only) | 70cm / 75cm | Riders 14 and over on 1 January |
| PC80 | 80cm / 85cm | Not if the horse and rider have jumped a double clear at 100cm+ this year or last |
| PC90 | 90cm / 95cm | Not if the horse and rider have jumped a double clear at 110cm+ this year or last |
| PC100 | 1.00m / 1.05m | Not if the horse and rider have jumped a double clear at 1.20m+ this year or last |
| PC110 | 1.10m / 1.15m | Open to all members and horses |
A horse and rider at PC70 or PC70 Plus also can't enter if they've jumped a double clear at 90cm+ this year or last. Combinations that have twice finished 1st to 3rd individually at the relevant Regional Championships or Championships aren't eligible for that level either.
All heights are maximums.
Membership: your child must be a Pony Club member at the closing date for entries and on the day to compete at Area qualifiers and Championships, including Regional Championships. The District Commissioner or Centre Proprietor certifies eligibility.
Kit doesn't need to be new, but it must be clean, neat, tidy and safe. Wearing the wrong kit can lead to disqualification.

Where Pony Club rules don't cover something, competitions are judged under British Showjumping rules. Where both cover the same point, the Pony Club rule takes precedence.
If your child is diagnosed with concussion, the Pony Club's 21-day concussion rule applies.
If your child is diagnosed with concussion, they must not ride, or take part in any Pony Club activity that involves close contact with, handling or riding horses or ponies, for 21 days. This may be extended on the advice of the treating doctor if symptoms persist.
The rule should be read alongside the Pony Club Concussion Advice and the UK Government's concussion guidelines.
