What do I need to know when my U16, U18 or U20 child competes in athletics in South Africa? Age groups, events, licences and club registration, insurance, spikes, kit, road race ages, championship selection, prize money and false starts.
Under ASA Rule 23.1, track and field age groups are based on the athlete's age on 31 December of the year of competition:
For road running, a Junior is anyone 19 or younger on 31 December, but the minimum ages for each road distance are based on age on race day.
An athlete may only compete in one age category in a competition, unless there's no matching event in their own age group, and must declare the category when entering. Provincial or ASA boards can approve other age groups for specific competitions.
The ASA championship programme (ASA Rule 23.5 table) lists these events:
| Event group | U16 | U18 | U20 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sprints and middle distance | 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m | 100m to 3000m | 100m to 1500m, 5000m; 10000m (men) |
| Hurdles | Boys 100mH, girls 90mH, 300mH | Boys 110mH, girls 100mH, 400mH | Men 110mH, women 100mH, 400mH |
| Steeplechase | 1500m | 2000m | 3000m |
| Relays | 4 x 100m | 4 x 100m, 4 x 400m, mixed 4 x 400m | 4 x 100m, 4 x 400m, mixed 4 x 400m |
| Jumps | Long, high, triple jump, pole vault | Same | Same |
| Throws | Shot, discus, javelin, hammer | Same | Same |
| Combined events | Pentathlon | Boys decathlon, girls heptathlon | Men decathlon, women heptathlon |
| Race walks | 5km | Boys 10km, girls 5km | 10km |
The 3000m is the longest track race for U16 and U18; 5000m and 10000m start at U20. Implement weights and hurdle heights get heavier and higher with each age group.
Licence needed: at any competition on the ASA national or provincial fixtures list, an athlete needs an ASA licence or a temporary licence for that event (ASA Rule 24.3). Licences apply at every age: even a child entering a young age group at the ASA Cross Country Championships must have a permanent licence (Rule 26.4.4).
Exception for school events: inter-school events where athletes compete in school kit are development events and don't need a licence up to municipal district level (Rule 26.4.5).
How to register (Rule 26):
A permanent licence is valid 1 January to 31 December and must be renewed every year. Each province sets the licence price charged by its clubs.
Under ASA Rule 25.19 (following World Athletics shoe rules):
ASA's guidance on spike shapes:
Under ASA Rule 25:
Undergarments that show (such as a T-shirt under a vest or tights under shorts) must be clean and free of markings.
ASA Rule 23.4 sets minimum ages for road races, the same for boys and girls, based on age on race day:
| Distance | Minimum age |
|---|---|
| 2-5km | 9 |
| 6-10km | 14 |
| 11-15km | 15 |
| 16-21.1km (half marathon) | 16 |
| 22-32km | 19 |
| 33-42.2km (marathon) and ultras | 20 |
So a 13-year-old can run a 5km but not a 10km, and a half marathon is open from 16. Fun runs of 8km or less fall outside this table. In cross country, U16s race 4km, U18 boys 6km and girls 4km, and U20 men 8km and women 6km.
Yes, but under ASA Rule 2:
Only eligible athletes can receive prize money. Temporary licence holders can win individual prizes but not team prizes.
ASA follows World Athletics TR 16:
ASA's domestic rules don't set a separate, more lenient false start rule for youth age groups.
