Under ASA Rule 23.1, track and field age groups are based on the athlete's age on 31 December of the year of competition:
- U18: 16 or 17 on 31 December.
- U20: 18 or 19 on 31 December.
- Senior (track and field): 16 and older on 31 December, so U18 and U20 athletes may also compete as seniors.
- U16: the youngest age group on the ASA championship programme.
For road running, a Junior is anyone 19 or younger on 31 December, but the minimum ages for each road distance are based on age on race day.
An athlete may only compete in one age category in a competition, unless there's no matching event in their own age group, and must declare the category when entering. Provincial or ASA boards can approve other age groups for specific competitions.
