For coaches of U16, U17 and U18 club volleyball teams in Canada, 2026-27 season (Volleyball Canada rules and Youth Nationals policies). Covers coach requirements, liberos, substitutions, net and ball, age categories, rosters, changing provinces and Stay to Play.
From Volleyball Canada's 2027 National Championships Coach Eligibility Requirements (updated August 26, 2026), which apply to every coach on a Nationals roster:
Every person in authority (PIA), including all coaching staff, must complete before provincial or territorial membership approval:
All coaches on a Nationals roster must also complete by March 15, 2027:
A coach who has not completed any mandatory requirement is ineligible and is removed from the Nationals roster; no exemptions are provided. Volleyball Canada's 2026 guide also says PIAs may not take part in volleyball activities until they meet the Safe Sport requirements, and that the background check must be issued within 36 months of the event.
From Volleyball Canada's 2027 National Championships Coach Eligibility Requirements (updated August 26, 2026), all deadlines March 15, 2027:
Penalties: a head coach who does not meet the requirements pays a $250 CAD fine before taking part. After March 15, 2027, a head coach who is still short and has already received a Nationals fine (2023 to 2026) is ineligible and is removed from the roster; the club must then secure an eligible coach through the team staff exemption process and pay a $500 fine.
Exemptions: a coach who has not met the requirements by March 15, 2027 may apply, but only if the head coach was assigned to the roster after March 30, 2027 through an approved roster change (with verification from the PTA). A coach who received an exemption in 2023 to 2026 cannot request a second, and PTA exemptions do not apply to Nationals.
Volleyball Canada 2026-27 rulebook, rule 19:
The 2026 Youth Nationals guide (section 6.3) sets 16U to 18U at 6 limited substitutions per set at National Championships (15U is 12 limited, and 14U uses Fair Play). The 2027 guide was not yet available when this was written.
Under the Volleyball Canada 2026-27 rulebook:
Under the Volleyball Canada 2026-27 rulebook (rule 2.1.1):
The net height over the two sidelines must be exactly the same and must not exceed the official height by more than 2 cm.
For Volleyball Canada Championships (rule 3.1), 16U uses the Mikasa VQ200w-CAN ball and 17U to 18U use the Mikasa V200w. Any match ball has a circumference of 65-67 cm and a weight of 260-280 g, and all balls in a match must meet the same standards.
Volleyball Canada's 2026-27 Indoor Nationals age categories (updated August 26, 2026) use a 16-month birth window. A player is eligible if born:
18U only, at 2027 Nationals: up to two athletes born January 1 to August 31, 2008 may be on a roster, provided they are not part of any U SPORTS, CCAA or other post-secondary volleyball program for October 1, 2026 to May 1, 2027. A maximum of two current U SPORTS, CCAA or other post-secondary athletes born September 1 to December 31, 2008 may also be on a roster; the club and post-secondary coach should agree this is developmentally appropriate. Athletes born in 2009 have no post-secondary restriction. RSEQ Division 2 and 3 collegiate athletes, intramural and club programs inside a post-secondary institution do not count as post-secondary, and RSEQ Division 1 first-year collegiate athletes and CCAA athletes are not considered post-secondary athletes in this document. The 18U head coach or club president must provide verification on request.
Exemptions for athletes born before the window are only for extraordinary circumstances, requested by the head coach or team manager through the PTA, based on Long-Term Development principles, and cost $50. A PTA may set different age category requirements.
Volleyball Canada 2026-27 rulebook (rule 4.1.1): a team may include up to 15 players, all of whom may be in uniform, warm up and sit on the bench. The rulebook registers 12 on the score sheet and only those 12 may play in a given match; the 12 may change from match to match. Assistant coaches may replace the head coach. For the match, up to one coach and two assistant coaches are allowed, plus one team therapist and one medical doctor (who must be a certified medical person).
For Nationals, the 2026 Youth Nationals guide says (the 2027 guide was not yet available, so details may change):
Volleyball Canada does not publish a separate club-to-club transfer policy in the documents reviewed. What its 2026 Youth Nationals Competition Guide does set (the 2027 guide was not yet available, so details may change):
Volleyball Canada's 2027 Stay to Play Policy applies to Youth Indoor National Championships. To be eligible to compete, teams and athletes must book accommodation through one of the official hotels arranged by Hudson Travel Group (HTG). A team must:
Non-compliant teams may face removal from the event, being placed on the Not in Good Standing list, administrative fees or fines, and ineligibility to register in future Nationals (club, coach and players). Exemptions exist for a small roster (fewer than 13 athletes and coaches in total), for rosters where local athletes bring the travelling group below 13, and for local clubs within the proximity distance of the venue.
Under the Volleyball Canada 2026-27 rulebook:
At 2026 Nationals, 15U to 18U matches were officiated by two referees, and there were no side switches between sets unless a court gave a clear advantage to one side (2026 Youth Nationals guide).
