What rules apply when my team competes at a British Cheerleading Association event, from Under 6 to Open (ages 5 and up)? Rule sets, age and levels, safety rules, shoes and jewellery, props, routine time and deductions for 2026/27.
The British Cheerleading Association (BCA) follows the IASF Cheer and Dance Rules (2025-2028). BCA's competition rules and safety guidelines comply with IASF technical and safety requirements, as they apply to UK duty of care.
For 2026/27:
Performing a skill outside your division's level is penalised under the scoring guidelines.
For BCA's 2026/27 season, an athlete's age is their age in 2027, the year of competition. For example, an athlete born in 2015 counts as 12.
Team divisions, stunt groups and duos follow the SportCheer UK Unified Divisions and Age Grid for 2026/27, which sets the age band and levels for each division. BCA makes no further splits in speciality divisions.
Cheer and dance solos use BCA's own age bands (Under 6, Under 8, Under 12, Under 16 and Open).
SportCheer England, whose UK age grid BCA follows, is the recognised national governing body for cheerleading in England.
BCA's 2026/27 cheer solo divisions:
| Division | Age in 2027 | Born | Highest level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 6 Solo | 5 to 6 | 2020 to 2022 | Level 1 |
| Under 8 Solo | 7 to 8 | 2018 to 2020 | Level 2 |
| Under 12 Solo | 9 to 12 | 2014 to 2018 | Level 5 |
| Under 16 Solo | 13 to 16 | 2010 to 2014 | Level 6 |
| Open Solo | 17+ | 2010 or earlier | Level 7 |
Dance solos use the same age bands (Under 6, Under 8, Under 12, Under 16 and Open). Stunt groups, cheer duos and dance duos follow the SportCheer UK Unified Age Grid. There are no further splits in speciality divisions.
BCA's published birth-year ranges overlap at the edges. If your athlete's birth year appears in two bands, their age in 2027 decides the division.
BCA runs several types of cheer division in 2026/27:
Performing skills above your level in Elite Cheer:
Scoring: Elite Cheer uses the IASF Cheer scoring system with an expanded quantity chart for the UK age grid; Prep and Novice use the USASF system with point values adjusted to match IASF.
The IASF Cheer Rules (2025-2028) general safety rules include:
Each level also has its own list of allowed and banned skills. Every skill allowed at a level is also allowed at higher levels, and a skill banned at a level is banned at all lower levels.
Under the IASF Cheer Rules (2025-2028):
Shoes
Jewellery
Braces, supports and casts
Mouth: no gum, sweets, cough drops or anything else that could cause choking, in practice or performance.
Only a few. Under the IASF Cheer Rules (2025-2028):
A uniform piece that is purposely taken off the body is treated as a prop.
Under the IASF Cheer Rules (2025-2028):
Under the IASF Cheer Rules (2025-2028) used by BCA:
Going over costs 0.5 points per second over the limit (for example, deductions start at 2:31 for a 2:30 routine).
BCA's Elite Cheer divisions use the IASF deduction system for 2026/27. For Levels 1 to 4 (and Non-Tumble 2.0 to 4.0), each occurrence costs:
| Deduction | Points | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Athlete fall | 0.15 | Hand(s) or knee(s) down in tumbling or jumps; an incomplete tumbling twist |
| Major athlete fall | 0.25 | Several body parts down in tumbling or jumps (hands and knees, seat and hands) |
| Building bobble | 0.25 | A stunt that almost drops but is saved, e.g. lowered from extended to prep level, a base or spotter going down, a top person's feet or hands touching the floor in a cradle |
| Building fall | 0.75 | A drop from a stunt or transition, e.g. to a cradle, load-in or prone position |
| Major building fall | 1.25 | Top person and/or bases and spotters drop to the floor, or a single-based top person lands on the floor without help |
| Skill out of level | 0.25 | A skill above your level but legal in Level 6 |
| Safety violation | 2.0 | A skill not allowed even in Level 6 |
| Over time | 0.5 per second | e.g. deductions start at 2:31 for a 2:30 limit |
| Boundary | 0.5 | Both feet off the 42 ft by 54 ft performance surface and any adjacent safety border |
An athlete who simply trips while walking during a transition isn't deducted. Levels 5 to 7 use a separate IASF deduction sheet.
