It depends on your role. Under the USA Gymnastics Safety & Response Policy:
Required (SafeSport training and background screening):
- Event staff assigned to monitor a locker room or changing area
- Meet Directors, judges, coaches, medical staff and independent photographers
- At member clubs, all volunteers or others authorized to have regular contact with minor athletes
Not considered regular contact (training not required for these roles alone):
- Concession and apparel workers
- Venue entry and ticket takers
- Announcers
- Security, venue staff (food service, janitorial), equipment installers
- Emergency medical personnel, media and sponsors
Background screenings must be done before regular contact with minor athletes begins, and refreshed every two years.
The U.S. Center for SafeSport also offers a free Volunteer Training course covering how to recognize abuse and misconduct, limit one-on-one adult-minor interactions, and know what to report.
