What do I need to know to volunteer at a USA Gymnastics women's sanctioned meet (Development Program and Xcel, gymnasts aged 4 and up)? Membership and SafeSport, the field of play, timing, spectators, results and awards, and reporting safety concerns.
If you'll be on the field of play, yes. Volunteers on the field of play must be:
All participants must be pre-registered through the USA Gymnastics Meet Reservation system. At sign-in, show your current electronic membership card (with valid dates and requirements) or an event credential verified by the Meet Director, and be ready to show it in the competition area if asked.
Memberships run August 1 to July 31, and all members must follow the USA Gymnastics Code of Ethical Conduct.
The field-of-play rule doesn't cover roles away from the competition floor, such as ticket takers or concessions. Those roles also aren't treated as regular contact with minor athletes for SafeSport training purposes.
It depends on your role. Under the USA Gymnastics Safety & Response Policy:
Required (SafeSport training and background screening):
Not considered regular contact (training not required for these roles alone):
Background screenings must be done before regular contact with minor athletes begins, and refreshed every two years.
The U.S. Center for SafeSport also offers a free Volunteer Training course covering how to recognize abuse and misconduct, limit one-on-one adult-minor interactions, and know what to report.
Only:
Also:
Not for calls. Using a cell phone for verbal conversation is prohibited on the field of play, and cell phones and wireless devices are generally prohibited in the competition area.
Exceptions:
Earbuds aren't allowed for gymnasts on the equipment, coaches while coaching, or judges while officiating.
Timed warm-up = time per gymnast × gymnasts in the squad:
| Development Program | Xcel | Per gymnast |
|---|---|---|
| Levels 1-2 | Bronze | 30 seconds |
| Level 3 | Silver | 45 seconds |
| Levels 4-5 | Gold | 1 minute |
| Levels 6-7 | Platinum | 1½ minutes |
| Level 8 | Diamond, Sapphire | 2 minutes |
| Levels 9-10 | 2½ minutes (includes bar settings) |
If a gymnast or team goes over time, report it to the Meet Director or Meet Referee. That report is the warning; any further infraction is a 0.20 penalty.
Floor warm-ups between routines: the Meet Director must assign an adult monitor to control how many gymnasts warm up at once and track the competition order. For Levels 6-10 and Xcel Platinum to Sapphire, a gymnast may start warming up when six competitors are ahead of her, with no more than five on the floor mat at once.
Prohibited at all USA Gymnastics sanctioned events:
If someone won't comply, get the Meet Director. The Meet Director is the one with authority to ask people to leave the competition site.

Other safety rules you can help with:
Rules that help prevent abuse at events:
It depends on the question:
| Question about | Who handles it |
|---|---|
| A score, judging or a deduction | The gymnast's coach. Only coaches can submit a score inquiry (within 5 minutes of the squad finishing the event) or request a video review. Coaches are required to tell gymnasts and parents to bring concerns to them, and may not approach judges directly |
| Apparatus, the schedule, rotations or meet setup | Meet Director or Meet Referee |
| Spectator behavior, seating, removing someone | Meet Director, who may ask people causing problems to leave |
| A possible injury or medical issue | Meet medical staff, if present, and the Meet Director |
| Possible abuse or an athlete in danger | Local authorities, plus a Safety and Response Report to USA Gymnastics or the U.S. Center for SafeSport |
Don't pass questions to the judges. They must stay at their event and avoid conversation during the competition.
