Under Swim England Technical Rule 501, swimming competitions held under Swim England's jurisdiction are normally run under:
- the relevant parts of the World Aquatics Rules (including bylaws) and World Aquatics Swimming Rules, or the World Para Swimming Rules for para-swimming competitions
- Swim England's Judicial Regulations and General Regulations (401-420)
- Swim England's additional Technical Rules
Swim England's published health and safety guidelines take precedence over all of these.
The current World Aquatics Competition Regulations came into force in February 2026, and World Aquatics issued a commentary in August 2026 clarifying some of them. The current Swim England Handbook is the 2026 edition (version 2026-v2, July 2026). Changes to Swim England's Technical Rules of Swimming normally take effect on 1 September each year unless the Board sets another date. Each licensed meet's conditions add its own rules on entries, age groups and timing.
