Under Rule 3 of the Rules of Netball 2024, before the start of a match the names of all players and team officials must be provided to the scorers, and each team names one player as captain. Under Rule 5, before play the scorers record the names of all players (including their playing positions for the start of play) and team officials. During the match they record team changes and substitutions, goals scored and unsuccessful shots, and the centre passes taken by each team.
The captain on court must wear identification specified by the event organiser (for example an arm band or a patch on the uniform), and if the captain is not on court, an on-court captain is advised to the umpires.
