Under Rule 3 of the Rules of Netball 2024, a team may have up to five team officials. They must include a coach and at least one primary care person (someone qualified to diagnose and treat injury or illness). A sixth team official is allowed only if that role is a team doctor.
Team officials and any players not on court are located at the team bench, which each team is allocated. A team official from either team may ask to observe the umpires' toss. Lower-level competitions may have fewer officials than this, in which case one person can take on several duties.

Under Rule 5, before play the scorers record the names of all players (including their playing positions for the start of play) and team officials. During the match they record team changes and substitutions, goals scored and unsuccessful shots, and the centre passes taken by each team.
The captain on court must wear identification specified by the event organiser (for example an arm band or a patch on the uniform), and if the captain is not on court, an on-court captain is advised to the umpires.
