NFHS uniform rules (Rule 3-3) allow one swimsuit per competitor, and it must be:
- made of woven or knit textile material
- permeable. From 2026-27, bonded or taped seams are exempt from this requirement (3-3-4b(2)).
- made so it doesn't aid buoyancy, and not altered to do so
- without zippers or other fasteners, except a waist tie on a brief or jammer and elastic in the leg, waist and strap openings
- for boys, not above the waist or below the top of the kneecap
- for girls, not beyond the shoulders, not below the top of the kneecap, and not covering the neck
Suits with a World Aquatics (FINA) mark or the USA Swimming approved checkmark are legal for NFHS competition if they otherwise meet these rules.
State associations publish these requirements in their swimming manuals and may add their own policies.
