Boxing SA uses a 10-point must system (regulation 34 of the Boxing Regulations):
- At the end of each round, the boxer who gave the better performance gets 10 points, and the opponent a proportionate lower number. If the round is even, both get 10.
- No half points or fractions. Record each round's score on your scorecard at the end of that round. Only official Boxing SA scorecards may be used.
- Points are awarded for:
- attack: direct, clean blows with the knuckle part of the closed glove to the front or sides of the head or body above the belt (the target area), and effective aggression;
- defence: guarding, slipping, ducking, blocking and otherwise cleverly avoiding blows, and countering.
- Points for defence must not outweigh points for attack.
- No points for: blows outside the target area, blows on the arms, or blows not landed with the knuckle part of the glove.
- Deductions: the referee tells you how many points to deduct for a foul.
Judges sit on three sides of the ring (the timekeeper on the fourth), score independently, and may be asked by the referee to help decide whether a foul occurred.
