What do Pony Riders and Junior riders (under 18) need to know to show jump under SA Show Jumping and SAEF rules? Age categories, registration, pony heights and measuring, horse ages, grading and QR points, open classes, dress, sponsors and passports.
SASJ age categories go by calendar year (SASJ Annexure A, 2026):
| Category | Eligible |
|---|---|
| Pony Rider | Up to the end of the year in which you turn 16, riding ponies |
| Junior | From the start of the year you turn 12 to the end of the year you turn 18 |
| U25 (special classes) | From the year you turn 16 to the end of the year you turn 25 (from 14 to 15 only where first-round fences are 1.40 m or lower) |
| Senior/Adult | From the start of the year you turn 18 |
| Dual Licence | From the start of the year you turn 16 to the end of the year you turn 18, on application with 5 QRs at Junior 1.35 m |
So riders aged 12 to 16 can be eligible as both a Pony Rider (on a pony) and a Junior (on a horse). Senior riders may only ride Senior classes and special category events.
All riders must be registered with SASJ and re-register on 1 January each year (SASJ Annexure A, 2026). By registering you agree to be bound by all SASJ rules and policies.
| Subscription | Who it's for | 2026 fee |
|---|---|---|
| Newcomers (Pony Series) | Riders 12 and under, up to and including PR 1.00 m | Free |
| Under 18 | Pony Riders (including PR Open) and Juniors | R835 |
| Recreational Rider (Category 3) | Recreational classes | Free |
| Dual Age Category Licence | Riders 16 to 18, on application with 5 QRs at Junior 1.35 m | R1 550 |
Your horse or pony also needs SASJ registration (R260, or free as recreational).
With a Dual Licence you may ride adult classes, but at any one event you may not also ride in other age categories; and if you ride a 1.50 m class you give up the Dual Licence and become an Adult.
South Africa follows the FEI pony height rule, adopted by the SAEF (SASJ Annexure C):
Registered ponies must have a valid, SASJ-approved height certificate uploaded to their profile before they can enter Pony Rider classes (Annexure A).
Under the SAEF pony-height resolution (SASJ Annexure C):
From SASJ Rule Directive 1/2026 (updating Annexures A and D):
| Height | Pony | Junior | Senior | Recreational and entry level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 1.00 m | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| 1.10 m and 1.20 m | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 |
| 1.30 m | n/a | 6 | 6 | 6 |
| 1.40 m and above | n/a | 7 | 7 | 7 |
Specific class rules can set higher ages, for example PR Open ponies must be 5+ and Junior Open horses 6+, and FEI national and international competitions follow FEI Article 202.
Under SASJ Annexure B (2026):
