Pre-match checks (Rule 17.B):
- Supplies: balls, scoresheets, pencils and a timer.
- Court: cleanliness, lighting, net height (36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center), court markings and hazards.
Pre-match briefing at the court (Rule 17.C):
- Inspect paddles. A paddle that's non-compliant or not on the USA Pickleball approved list must be switched before the match, with no penalty (Rule 18.A.1).
- Point out approved rule modifications, court abnormalities and any non-standard conditions that could be safety issues.
- Explain who makes which line calls (this can be covered by the Tournament Director's pre-match instructions).
- Use a fair method, such as a 1 or 2 written on the back of the scoresheet or a coin toss, to give one side first choice of serving, receiving, starting end, or deferring. Once a choice is made, it can't be changed.
- Make sure each doubles team's starting server is wearing the required identification (Rule 18.C).
Players must report within 10 minutes after the match is called (Rule 18.F).
