What happens if I hit the wrong ball?

Making a stroke at a wrong ball gets the general penalty (Rule 6.3c):
- Stroke play: two penalty strokes. Strokes with the wrong ball don't count. You must correct the mistake by going back to your own ball and playing it as it lies, or taking relief under the Rules. If you don't correct it before teeing off on the next hole (or, on the last hole, before returning your scorecard), you're disqualified.
- Match play: loss of hole. If you and your opponent play each other's balls, the first to hit a wrong ball loses the hole; if that's unknown, there's no penalty and the hole is played out with the balls exchanged.
If someone else played your ball, replace a ball on the original spot (Rule 6.3c(2)). There's no penalty for hitting a wrong ball that's moving in water in a penalty area.
To avoid this, put an identifying mark on your ball. You may lift your ball to identify it after marking its spot (Rule 7.3).
