Under Rule 9.5:
| After... | Stall count restarts at |
|---|---|
| An accepted breach by the defence | "Stalling 1" |
| An accepted breach by the offence | Maximum 9 |
| A contested stall-out | "Stalling 8" |
| Players agree the call did not affect the play and make up positions (Rule 16.3.2) | "Stalling 1" |
| All other calls, including "pick" and contested calls | Maximum 6 |
| A time-out by the thrower | Maximum 9 (or 1 if the marker changes) |
| A violation about the check | The same count as before that violation |
"Maximum n" means: take the last number fully said before the call, add one, and restart at that or at n, whichever is lower. So if the count was at 3 when a contested call was made, it restarts at "Stalling 4", not 6.
If the marker moves more than 3 metres away, or a different player becomes the marker, the count restarts at "Stalling 1".
