Under Rule 9:
- The marker (the defender guarding the thrower) says "Stalling" and counts from 1 to 10, with at least one second between the start of each number. The count must be clearly communicated to the thrower.
- The marker can only count when play is live (or once a pivot point is set after a turnover), when they are within 3 metres of the thrower's pivot point, and when all defenders are legally positioned.
- If the thrower has not released the disc before the marker starts to say "ten", it is a stall-out: a turnover, and play stops.
- If the thrower believes the stall-out was wrong, or there was a fast count just before it, they can contest; play restarts with the count at 8.
After a turnover, the new thrower must walk (or move faster) directly to the disc and set a pivot within 10 seconds in the central zone or 20 seconds in an end zone. If they delay, the defence can warn them and then start the count.
