Under the WFDF Rules (Rule 5.4), mixed games should use an alternating 4:3 ratio: each point is played with either 4 female-matching and 3 male-matching players, or 3 female-matching and 4 male-matching players. The event must say which ratio rule it uses (WFDF Appendix A6):
Ratio Rule A ("prescribed ratio"), required at all WFDF events:
- After the first disc flip, a second flip decides who picks the ratio for point 1.
- Points 2 and 3 use the reverse ratio, points 4 and 5 go back to the first ratio, and so on, switching every two points. Half time does not change the pattern.
- Prescribed pull: the pull must be thrown by a player of the gender that has 4 on the field. Breaking this is treated as an offside violation.
Ratio Rule B ("end zone decides"):
- A second disc flip decides which end zone is "End zone A". In the first half, the team at End zone A chooses the ratio at the start of each point; in the second half, the team at End zone B chooses.
Making match-ups easy to see: captains should agree a method at the start; the preferred one is that the offence's players of the gender with 4 on the field stand on the end zone line giving the ratio hand signal for 5 seconds.
At WFDF events, a mixed team must have 4 female-matching and 4 male-matching players available for every point. If a point starts without the correct ratio, the opposition can call a violation.
