What do I need to know to play senior club sevens in South Africa? How sevens laws differ, match times, replacements, yellow cards, conversions, restarts, scrums, under-age players, the technical zone and concussion.
The World Rugby Laws of the Game apply to sevens, with the sevens variations in the 2026 law book. The main differences:
| Sevens | Fifteens | |
|---|---|---|
| Players on the field | 7 | 15 |
| Replacements | up to 5 | up to 8 |
| Match length | 2 × 7 min (finals up to 2 × 10) | 2 × 40 min |
| Half-time | up to 2 min | up to 15 min |
| Yellow card | 2 minutes | 10 minutes |
| Conversions and penalty goals |
| drop kick only, within 30 seconds |
| place or drop kick, within 60 seconds |
| Kick-off after a score | by the team that scored | by the opponents |
| Scrum | 3 players a side | 8 players a side |
| Extra time | first score wins | as set by the match organiser |
Sevens matches also use two in-goal judges (not needed when a TMO is present). They signal kicks at goal and touch-in-goal, and can help with try decisions.
Under the World Rugby Laws of the Game 2026 sevens variations (Law 5):
| Length | |
|---|---|
| Normal match | 2 × 7 minutes, plus time lost |
| Competition final | Up to 2 × 10 minutes, plus time lost and extra time |
| Half-time | Up to 2 minutes |
Extra time (for a drawn match that needs a winner)

SA Rugby Side-Line Management Protocol for Sevens (SA Rugby tournaments)
Under the World Rugby Laws of the Game 2026 sevens variations (Law 9.29):
If a temporary replacement is shown a yellow card, the player they replaced may not come back until the suspension is over, and only if medically cleared and within the required time.
At SA Rugby tournaments, the technical zone manager tells the referee when a sin-binned player may return.
Under the World Rugby Laws of the Game 2026 sevens variations:
Conversions
Penalty goals
In extra time, the first team to score wins immediately, so a try ends the match without a conversion.
In sevens, the team that scored kicks off. This is the opposite of fifteens. Under the World Rugby Laws of the Game 2026 sevens variations:
After an unsuccessful kick at goal goes dead through in-goal, the restart must be taken within 30 seconds.
Under the World Rugby Laws of the Game 2026 sevens variations:
Scrums
Lineouts
Penalties and free kicks
Held up in-goal
SA Rugby's Under-aged Rugby Regulations, Addendum 2 (Sevens) apply both the school age-banding rules and the adult under-age rules to sevens:
The front-row exemptions exist because sevens scrums are not treated like full 15-a-side scrum contests.
SA Rugby's Side-Line Management Protocol for Sevens applies at SA Rugby sevens tournaments (World Rugby and Rugby Africa tournaments use their own protocol where one exists).
Technical zone (maximum 9 people per team)
The zone may be no larger than 7 m long and 2.5 m wide. Teams must be in place 2 minutes before kick-off.
Water carriers
Medical staff work from the technical zone and may roam the touchlines, one on each side of the field.
SA Rugby's Concussion Regulations apply to sevens as to every other form of the game:
