Under Rule 3.3b, scoring is shared between you and your marker (usually a playing partner):
Your marker:
- after each hole, confirms your score with you and writes it on the card
- at the end of the round, certifies the hole scores (signs the card).
You:
- check the hole scores the marker has entered and raise any problem with the Committee
- certify the card yourself and make sure the marker has certified it
- don't change a score the marker has entered without the marker's agreement or the Committee's approval
- return the card promptly. Once it's returned, you can't change it.
If you don't certify the card, or don't get it certified by the marker, you're disqualified, unless the marker's failure was beyond your control.
Handicap and adding up: under the Rules you don't need to write your handicap on the card or add up your scores. The Committee calculates handicap strokes and the net score, and errors in those aren't penalised. A Committee can bring in a Local Rule making players responsible for their handicap on the card, but the GB&I handicapping guidance recommends clubs don't use it; where a club does, you must enter your Course Handicap correctly or risk disqualification.
