What do I need to know as a parent of a Swimming South Africa age group swimmer (16 and under)? Gala levels, age groups, qualifying times, entries, relays, caps and suits, fines, protests and volunteering as an official.
Swimming South Africa (SSA) runs a ladder of age group competitions. All age group championships are club based, and World Aquatics technical rules apply at national competitions.
| Level | Who takes part | Key features |
|---|---|---|
| Level 0 (intra-district) | Registered clubs, swim schools and schools | 25 m pool, no qualifying times, ribbons or certificates (no medals) |
| Level 1 (intra-provincial) | Registered clubs, swim schools and schools | One per province; province may set qualifying times; timed finals; a chance to qualify for higher levels |
| Level 2 (regional) | Clubs and schools | Four regions: WC and EC; KZN; Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga; North West, Northern Cape and Free State |
| (regional) |
| Clubs |
| Held at three regional venues |
| SA National Junior Championships | Clubs | The top age group meet |
In the 2025-2026 season SA Junior Nationals were held at Newton Park, Gqeberha, from 21 to 25 March 2026. A club near another region's venue may opt to swim there, but all its swimmers must then go to the same venue.
A swimmer's age is their age on the first day of the competition.
| Level | Individual age groups |
|---|---|
| Level 0 (district) | 7&U, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 |
| Level 1 (provincial) | 9&U, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15-19 |
| Level 2 (regional) | 10&U, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 |
| Level 3 (regional) | 11&U, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 |
| SA National Junior | 12&U, 13, 14, 15, 16 |
The oldest age group at SSA age group championships is 16. Para swimmers at Level 3 swim in multi-class events with two age groups: 14&U and 15 and over.
A qualifying time (QT) is the time a swimmer must have achieved, and recorded on the SSA National Database, to enter an event at a championship.
| Level | Who sets the QTs |
|---|---|
| Level 0 (district) | No QTs |
| Level 1 (provincial) | Each province decides whether to set QTs and what they are, so this varies by province |
| Level 2, Level 3, SA National Junior | SSA, published by age group and sex in the annual SSA competition rules |
| SA Youth, SA National Aquatic and SA Short Course Championships | SSA, published in the same rules |
QTs are faster at each step up. For example, in 2025-2026 a 12-year-old girl needed 35.63 for the 50 m freestyle at Level 2.
Times count only once they are on the database: swimmers must be registered with SSA and have swum the time at a competition whose results are loaded. For 2025-2026, times from 1 May 2025 counted, and the cut-off for age group competitions was 1 March 2026.
| Championship | Minimum requirement on the SSA National Database |
|---|---|
| Level 2 Regional | At least one 200 m individual medley (IM) time, and at least one Level 2 qualifying time |
| Level 3 Regional | At least one 200 m IM time, and at least one Level 3 qualifying time |
| SA National Junior | At least one IM time (200 m or 400 m), and at least one SA National Junior qualifying time |
Deadlines: the qualifying cut-off for 2025-2026 age group competitions was 1 March 2026. Results from meets after that date don't count for entry unless a concession was applied for before 1 March. Requests for concessions on medical grounds (including not meeting the IM requirement) had to be received, with medical reports, by the same date. Entry fees paid for entries that don't meet the rules are forfeited.
All entries go through the provincial secretary, not directly from parents.
No. A swimmer may compete at only one of the SSA age group championships each season: Level 2 Regional, Level 3 Regional or SA National Junior Championships. They must swim at the highest level they've qualified for:
Swimming up:
From Level 1 upwards, swimmers must have a time on the SSA National Database for every event they enter. Level 0 has no qualifying times.
| Level | Events your child may enter |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | Only events they already have a database time for |
| Level 2 | All events with a Level 2 qualifying time, plus other events with a database time |
| Level 3 | All qualified events, plus other events with a time on the database for the current season. The 50 m events have no qualifying time: a qualified swimmer may add any 50 m stroke they have a database time for |
| SA National Junior | All qualified events, plus others with database times, except the 400, 800 and 1500 m freestyle, which need a qualifying time in at least one of those three events (or an approved concession). 50 m events have no qualifying time, but can't be entered on a no time (NT) |
At Level 0 and Level 1 all events are timed finals, and organisers give ribbons or certificates rather than medals.
At SSA age group championships:
Relay age groups are wider than individual ones, for example 12&U, 13-14 and 15-16 at Level 2, Level 3 and Level 1 (where the top band is 15-19). Mixed relays are part of the programme at every level.
Caps (SSA competition rules):
Swimsuits: SSA applies the World Aquatics rules at all national competitions. Under those rules:
Logos on suits (SSA): one sponsor's logo and one manufacturer's logo, each up to 30 cm² when worn (two manufacturer's logos are allowed on a one-piece suit, one above and one below the waist, not next to each other).
The 2025-2026 SSA competition rules set these charges:
| Situation | Charge |
|---|---|
| Withdrawal at the Team Managers' Meeting | Free |
| Withdrawal later than 1 hour before the start of the evening session before the heats | R200 per event |
| No-show for a heat or final (including an alternate who doesn't report for a final) | R300, and the swimmer can't swim another event until it's paid |
| Referee rules a swimmer deliberately false started or didn't swim to their ability | R500, and the swimmer is withdrawn from all further events in that session, including relays |
| Late entry between entry closing and corrections closing | 3 times the normal entry fee |
| Late entry at the Team Managers' Meeting (the last chance) | 10 times the normal entry fee |
Withdrawals from finals must be made before the end of the heats session, or as the Referee announces.
At SSA championships:
Under World Aquatics rules, which SSA applies at all national competitions, a disqualified swimmer gets no time or place in the results.
At SSA inter-club and provincial championships, each club or province must supply SSA-registered, trained officials for every session. The number depends on how many swimmers it enters:
| Swimmers entered | Officials required per session |
|---|---|
| 1-4 | 1 judge (heats sessions) |
| 5-10 | 1 judge and 1 timekeeper |
| 11 or more | At least 3: 2 judges and 1 timekeeper |
The officials' names must be sent in with the entries, and entries aren't accepted without them. If an official doesn't turn up, the club or province is fined R1,000 per missing official and its swimmers may be excluded. So parents who train and register as officials directly keep their club's swimmers in the gala.
Dress code for officials: white shirt with navy-blue trousers or skirt for finals; navy-blue shorts are allowed for heats; closed white shoes.
The oldest age group at Swimming South Africa (SSA) age group competitions is 16. After that:
