For parents of U8 to U18 flag football players under the 2026 Canadian Amateur Rule Book for Flag Football. Covers contact rules, team sizes, equipment, game length, downs and scoring, flag pulling, ball sizes and safety.
The Canadian Amateur Rule Book for Flag Football (published with Football Canada's Non-Contact Rules and Safety Committee) names age groups U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 and U20 through to senior in its field and ball-size rules. It does not state a single age range for flag football.

The rules are built to avoid contact: the most important principle is to avoid any significant and impactful contact. Players are responsible for the safety of their opponents as well as their teammates and must control their aggressiveness to avoid, or minimize, bodily contact.

For youth and recreational leagues the rule book recommends appropriately sized footballs, with these as the minimum sizes (equivalent makes also work):
| Players | Length | Width | Wilson | Nike | Baden |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| U10 and below | 9.5-10" | 6-6.5" | Pee Wee (K2) | Size 6 | Pee Wee (Size 5) |
| U12 male; U12, U14 and U16 female | 9.5-10.5" | 6-6.5" | Junior (GST) | Size 7 | Junior (Size 6) |
| U14 and U16 male; U18 and senior female | 10.5-11" | 6.5-6.75" | Youth (GST) | Size 8 | Youth (Size 7) |
| U18 and senior male | 11" | 7" | Official | Size 9 | Official (Size 9) |
This table follows the "Rule Changes 2026" page. The table in Rule 2 of the same rule book places U16 female players in the Youth size instead of the Junior size, so a league may differ for that group. Teams may use their own ball or agree to use one game ball, and for regional, national and international events the ball is set in the event's Technical Package.

Lightning: the rule book advises having an action plan, a designated person monitoring the weather, a cell phone for emergencies and an accessible first aid kit. Take appropriate shelter when you count 30 seconds or fewer between lightning and thunder; safe shelter includes inhabited buildings and fully enclosed vehicles. Remain sheltered for 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning flash before resuming.
Bleeding: a player or official with a wound or laceration where oozing or bleeding occurs must leave the field until appropriate medical treatment is given. They may return only after the bleeding has stopped and the wound is completely and securely covered, and the referee must approve the return. A uniform or equipment saturated with blood must be cleaned or changed immediately.
Injuries: if an official calls a time out for an injured player, the player must be removed from the field for at least 1 play unless their team calls a time out. If a referee feels that continuing may jeopardize a player's safety, the official may remove that player from the game immediately, and that decision is final.
