What will my child play at junior club hockey (ages 5 to Under 18), and what do they need? Formats from age 5 to Under 18, age groups, match lengths, protective kit, uniform, changing clubs, concussion and safeguarding.
England Hockey's Junior Hockey Framework is its approach for 5-11 year olds across clubs, primary schools and community groups. It's being rolled out in phases from September 2025.
From around age 10, children can move on to In2Hockey.
In2Hockey is England Hockey's adapted game for players aged 10 to 14. It's played either:
It's designed as a gradual step from small-sided hockey into the full 11-a-side game. England Hockey's junior competitions also use 7 or 6-a-side for Under 11 to Under 13 festivals and 7-a-side for some Under 14 festivals, with 11-a-side from Under 14 upwards.
England Hockey's junior competition age groups use a 1 September cut-off. For 2026/27, to play in a junior competition a player must be:
| Age group | Born on or after |
|---|---|
| Under 14 | 1 September 2012 |
| Under 16 | 1 September 2010 |
| Under 18 | 1 September 2008 |
The only exception is a player with an England Hockey Age Dispensation Certificate for that age group. Players must also be registered with their club on England Hockey's GMS system.
Full-length junior matches (England Hockey Junior Competition Regulations 2026/27):
| Age group | Standard | Alternative if both teams agree beforehand |
|---|---|---|
| Under 16 and Under 18 | 2 x 35-minute halves, 5-10 minute half-time | 4 x 17 min 30 s quarters |
| Under 14 | 2 x 30-minute halves | 4 x 15-minute quarters |
Under 14 to Under 18 teams playing full-length games should play only one full-length match a day.
Festivals and tournaments: England Hockey's recommended limits:
| Age group | Format | Max playing time in a day | Max matches | Minimum game length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 14 | 7-a-side | 2 hours | 6 | 10 min each way |
| Under 12 and Under 13 | 7 or 6-a-side | 1 hour 45 min | 7 | 9 min each way, or 15 min one way |
| Under 11 | 7 or 6-a-side | 1 hour 30 min | 9 | 9 min each way, or 10 min one way |
Teams must have a break between games, and England Hockey strongly recommends the whole event lasts at least one and a half times the playing time (for example, 2 hours of play across 5 hours). Organisers can shorten games, especially for festivals and lower-tier activity.
In junior club hockey, yes. England Hockey says junior hockey in clubs caters for players of mixed ability, experience and gender, and its Junior Hockey Framework for 5-11 year olds works the same way.
In England Hockey's Under 14 to Under 18 junior competitions, clubs enter teams by gender and age group. Which competition a player plays in is decided under England Hockey's Trans and Non-Binary Participation Policy (Junior Competition Regulations 2026/27, reg 4.1.1.3).
Under the FIH Rules of Hockey (Rule 4.2), which England Hockey uses:
Field players
Goalkeepers must wear at least headgear, leg guards and kickers (headgear and hand protectors can come off only to take a penalty stroke). They wear a shirt in a different colour from both teams, over any upper-body protection.
England Hockey's Junior Competition Regulations (Under 14 to Under 18, 2026/27) set the standard. It's the aspiration at all levels, though not always achievable at every level:
Under the FIH rules, field players may also choose shorts, a skort or a skirt, provided they're the same colour and design as the team's.
Not in England Hockey's Under 14 to Under 18 outdoor junior competitions. Under the Junior Player Selection Policy (2026/27):
England Hockey follows the UK Concussion Guidelines for Non-Elite (Grassroots) Sport: "If in doubt, sit them out."
Most concussions happen without being knocked out.
Under England Hockey's Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy, every club must:
You can raise a concern about your child with the club's Welfare Officer.
