What do I need to know before my child (Minors, Schools or Junior, ages 10-16) boxes in an England Boxing club show? Age categories, medicals, skills bouts, round lengths, matching, kit and concussion rules.
England Boxing categories go by year of birth, not date of birth. The exception is Minors, where the boxer's actual age counts.
| Category | 2026 year of birth |
|---|---|
| Minors | From the 10th birthday to the end of the year of the 11th birthday (born 2015, or aged 10) |
| Schools | 2012–2014 |
| Junior | 2010–2011 |
| Youth | 2008–2009 |
| Senior | 1986–2007 |
The bands move up by a year each calendar year.
Your child can't box if they are:
Soft contact lenses are allowed. If your child wears braces, the ringside doctor decides at the pre-bout medical whether they can box.
A skills bout is a supervised, non-competitive bout that bridges the gap between club sparring and competitive boxing. There's no judging and no winner, and heavy punching and aggression aren't allowed. The announcer tells the crowd it's a skills bout before it starts.
Rules:
All bouts are 3 rounds with a 1-minute rest between rounds.
| Bout | Round length |
|---|---|
| Any bout involving a 10-year-old | 3 × 1 minute |
| Two 11-year-old Minors | 3 × 1.5 minutes |
| Schools v Schools | 3 × 1.5 minutes |
| Schools v Junior | 3 × 1.5 minutes |
| Junior v Junior | 3 × 2 minutes |
| Junior v Youth | 3 × 2 minutes |
| Skills bout with a 10-year-old | 3 × 1 minute |
| Any other skills bout | 3 × 1.5 minutes |
At the 2026 England Boxing National Junior Championships, all bouts are 3 × 2 minutes.

Weigh-in allowance
During the weigh-in, Minors, Schools, Junior and Youth boxers may only gain or lose:
Recommended limit on bouts per season (skills bouts included, national championships excluded):
Compulsory for all Minors, Schools, Junior and Youth boxers (boys and girls):
Clothing: vest/singlet (no red vest when boxing from the blue corner, and no blue vest from the red corner), shorts from mid-thigh to above the knee, light boots or trainers without spikes or heels, and socks no higher than the knee.
Also:
The referee gives an eight count when a boxer is hurt or knocked down. The maximum number of counts before the bout is stopped depends on the category:
| Category | Max per round | Max per bout |
|---|---|---|
| Minors and Schools | 2 | 3 |
| Juniors, Youths and Senior females | 3 | 4 |
A count caused by an illegal blow doesn't count towards these limits.
The ringside doctor sets a medical suspension, records it in the boxer's Digital BCR1, and it can't be negotiated. During a suspension your child must not train or spar.
| Incident | Minimum suspension |
|---|---|
| One KO from head blows, or a diagnosis of concussion | 30 days |
| Two KOs or RSCs from head blows (or concussions) within 3 months | No boxing or sparring for at least 30 days after the second |
| Three within 12 months, with concussion | One year after the third |
If a bout is stopped for heavy head blows (RSC-H) but the doctor finds no concussion, no suspension is required, though the doctor can still give one. The same suspensions apply if a sparring session is stopped for blows to the head.
Returning (boxers 18 and under): after the 30 days, and once symptom-free for at least 2 weeks, your child works through England Boxing's graduated return-to-boxing steps. They must stay symptom-free for 48 hours at each step before moving up. If symptoms come back, they rest for 48 hours and drop back a step. They must see a doctor and get medical clearance before going back to sparring. They should not return to sport until they are back at school or learning full time without symptoms.
