For parents of BMX racers aged 2 to 16 in AusCycling BMX racing, 2026 regulations. Covers age classes, riding up, Novice and participation classes, helmets and clothing, pedals, bikes, number plates, advanced sections, race format and membership.
Annexure 5 of the 2026 AusCycling General Technical Regulations sets the BMX racing categories. A competitor's age is defined as their age at the end of 31 December of the competition year, and the BMX year begins on 1 January.
Riders are classified by age, gender, bicycle style (Standard 20 inch or Cruiser 24 inch) and competition level.

The 2026 BMX racing regulations recognise two bike styles: Standard 20 inch and Cruiser 24 inch.
A rider may enter one age category, one Cruiser category and one Junior Superclass or Superclass category at the same event.
Both are participation classes for ages 2 to 7 (not scored or timed). Sprocket Rocket riders use 18" or 20" bikes, and Sprocket riders cannot ride up into competitive categories. Mini Wheelers use a 13" maximum bike.
Mini Wheeler bike (2026 BMX racing regulations):
Mini Wheeler clothing: long pants, long-sleeved shirt, covered shoes, full fingered gloves, and a helmet (stack hats are permitted) that meets Australian standards, with the strap securely fastened.
The 2026 BMX racing regulations set these plate colours:
A rider must always ride with the number they earned at one of the immediately preceding Championships, or one they personally chose for the event (not allowed at National Championships). Numbers 1 to 8 are reserved for riders who placed in the preceding titles and carry the title's letters (for example 1WA for Western Australia or 1A for Australia). A plate has a maximum of 3 digits, and 0 or 00 is not allowed.
If two riders choose the same number, the rider in the designated (merged) category keeps it, then the host club member, then the host state or territory member, then whoever entered first. The other rider adds an X.
Number height is 10 cm and width 1.5 cm, with a background border of at least 1 cm, and plates provided by the organiser must not be altered.
Under the 2026 BMX racing regulations, only riders aged 16+ are permitted to race on 8 m/SX hills or pro straights, regardless of the type or class of event. Advanced rider sections (pro straights) must be ridden only by participants in Male championship (Elite, U23, Junior Elite) and Superclass riders.
Riders entering Superclass at an AusCycling sanctioned event where an 8 m/SX hill or pro straight is available must show a competency certification before racing begins. Junior Superclass always rides the same straights as the Challenge categories.
The 2026 BMX racing regulations describe three phases at a BMX race meeting: motos, then qualifiers (eighths, quarters, semi-finals and so on), then the final. Events may use the UCI-BMX scoring and transfer system.
The 2026 general technical regulations say all participants in cycling events must hold the designated required current AusCycling membership, and must show proof of membership when asked. First-time applicants may be asked for proof of date of birth. A Sidehack passenger (swinger) must also be a current AusCycling member.
The AusCycling membership page (auscycling.org.au/membership) lists:
For State or Territory Championships, riders holding an AusCycling Race Membership or UCI licence may enter. Prices are those on the membership page and may change.
