A player may request a medical time-out from any official at any time during the match or warm-up (USTA Reg. III.F.5). Under Table 13:
| Qualified medical person available | None available | |
|---|---|---|
| Evaluation begins | When they arrive at the court | After you explain the rule and supplies are brought |
| Treatment time | Up to 3 minutes, including deciding whether the player can continue | Same |
| Who treats | Qualified medical person or trainer | Anyone the player chooses; you may provide supplies |
| Maximum total time | 15 minutes, however many conditions are treated | Same |
- One time-out per treatable condition, and no more than two during one stoppage. Cramping and heat illness: one in the warm-up and one in the match.
- Not treatable: general fatigue, conditions that can't be helped by on-court treatment, and anything needing an injection (other than insulin), IV or oxygen. Receiving those means an immediate default (Reg. III.F.4).
- Exceeding the time limit is penalized under the Point Penalty System. Not resuming within 30 seconds after the time-out ends is a code violation (Table 14).
- No coaching during a medical time-out (Reg. III.F.7).
