What do I need to keep my USA Swimming coach membership valid?
Rule- USA
- USA Swimming
- Age group swimming
- 18 and under
- 2026 rules
- Coaches
Coach members must be at least 18 and keep these current:
| Requirement | How often |
|---|---|
| Criminal background check | Every 2 years |
| Athlete Protection Training (SafeSport Trained Core course, then refreshers) | Every year. You can renew from 90 days before expiry. |
| CPR/AED certification | Valid 2 years |
| Safety Training for Swim Coaches (STSC): an online course and test, plus an in-water skills session | Valid 2 years. A current lifeguard certification can count for the in-water part. |
- There is no grace period. Your coach membership isn't valid if any requirement lapses, and you're no longer insured as a coach from the date a safety certification expires.
- First Aid is no longer a separate requirement, because it's included in the STSC online course.
- Junior coaches (16 or 17 and enrolled in high school) and provisional coaches (new or lapsed coaches) must be directly supervised one-to-one by a coach member in good standing. You can be a provisional coach for at most 3 years.
Your exact expiry dates are on your USA Swimming account.
