What do I need to know to race age-group triathlon (16 and over) in South Africa under the 2026 World Triathlon rules? Licences, age categories, wetsuits, drafting and blocking, time penalties, helmets, transition, race numbers and outside help.
According to Triathlon South Africa's registration and licensing information:
Racing rules: TSA is World Triathlon's member federation in South Africa, so the World Triathlon Competition Rules apply. The 2026 edition (amended 29 April 2026) covers age-group racing. TSA describes age-group racers as "World Triathletes".
Age groups: age-group athletes race against others of the same gender in five-year bands, such as 25-29 or 30-34. Under World Triathlon rule 2.5, your age is your age on 31 December of the year of the race. So if you turn 30 at any point in 2026, you race in the 30-34 category for all of 2026.
Minimum ages for triathlon (World Triathlon Appendix A):
| Distance | Swim / bike / run | Minimum age |
|---|---|---|
| Super sprint | 250-500 m / 6.5-13 km / 1.7-3.5 km | 15 |
| Sprint | 750 m / 20 km / 5 km | 16 |
| Standard | 1500 m / 40 km / 10 km | 18 |
| Middle distance | 1.9-3 km / 80-90 km / 20-21.9 km | 18 |
| Long distance | 3-4 km / 91-200 km / 22-42.2 km | 18 |
| Relays (per leg) | 250-300 m / 5-8 km / 1.5-2 km | 15 |
Elite or age-group: Triathlon South Africa separates elite athletes, who race internationally, from age-group athletes, who are non-professionals grouped by age.
Wetsuit use depends on the water temperature, the swim length and your age group (World Triathlon rule 4.2):
Age-groupers from the youngest category up to 55-59:
| Swim length | Wetsuit forbidden | Wetsuit mandatory |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1500 m | 22 °C and above | 15.9 °C and below |
| 1501 m and longer | 24.6 °C and above | 15.9 °C and below |
Age-groupers 60-64 and older:
| Swim length | Wetsuit forbidden | Wetsuit mandatory |
|---|---|---|
| All distances | 24.6 °C and above | 15.9 °C and below |
Between those temperatures, a wetsuit is optional.
Related rules:
Swim rules (World Triathlon rule 4.1):
Maximum time in the water for age-groupers (rule 4.3):
| Swim length | Time limit |
|---|---|
| Up to 300 m | 20 min |
| 301 to 750 m, water below 31 °C | 30 min |
| 301 to 750 m, water 31 °C or warmer | 20 min |
| 751 to 1000 m | 50 min |
| 1001 to 1500 m | 1 h 10 min |
| 1501 to 3000 m | 1 h 40 min |
| 3001 to 4000 m | 2 h 20 min |
Swim distances may be shortened or cancelled for very high or very low water temperatures (rule 4.4).
Is drafting allowed? (World Triathlon rule 5.5 a) For age-group triathlon:
| Race | Drafting |
|---|---|
| Super sprint | Illegal |
| Sprint | Can be draft-legal or draft-illegal. Check the race information |
| Standard | Illegal |
| Middle and long distance | Illegal |
| Mixed relay | Legal |
In draft-illegal races:
In draft-legal races, you still may not draft off a rider of a different gender, a rider on a different lap, or a motorbike or vehicle.
Blocking (rule 5.7): keep to the side of the course. Riding in a position where someone behind can't pass you is blocking. It earns a yellow card, served at the next bike penalty box. The briefing tells you which side to pass on.
Penalties: a drafting time penalty is 30 seconds (sprint) to 3 minutes (long distance), served in the next bike penalty box. A second drafting offence means disqualification in standard and shorter races, or the third in middle and long distance. Drafting calls cannot be protested.
Length (World Triathlon rule 3.3 e):
| Distance | Drafting penalty | Other infringements |
|---|---|---|
| Long | 3 min | 1 min |
| Middle | 2 min | 30 s |
| Standard | 1 min | 15 s |
| Sprint | 30 s | 10 s (also relays) |
| Shorter than sprint | 30 s | 5 s |
Where age-groupers serve it (rule 3.3 b):
| Where the infringement happened | Where it's served |
|---|---|
| Start or swim | In T1, at your rack spot |
| Transition 1 | On the spot |
| Bike, including drafting | Next bike penalty box |
| Transition 2 | On the spot |
| Run | Warning, or time penalty on the spot |
Stopping somewhere else counts as not serving the penalty.
How it works:
A second drafting penalty means disqualification in standard-distance and shorter races. In middle and long distance, it's the third. A verbal warning may be given instead of a penalty for an unintentional, minor infringement where no advantage was gained.
Under World Triathlon rules 3.9 and 5.6:
Disqualification (rule 3.6): for severe violations, such as repeated drafting or dangerous or unsportsmanlike conduct, a Technical Official whistles, shows a red card and calls your number with "Disqualified". You may still finish the race. Disqualifications are posted on the board in the post-finish area. If you're told after finishing, you or your national federation have 5 days to tell the Technical Delegate if you want to appeal.
Helmet (World Triathlon rule 5.2 g):
Bikes: UCI rules apply, as at 1 January of the current year. That means UCI time trial rules for draft-illegal races (most age-group racing) and UCI road race rules for draft-legal ones. Disc brakes are allowed. Platform pedals are allowed if they have a quick-release mechanism.
Banned equipment includes: headphones, headsets, technical earplugs, or smart helmets that sit in or over the ears; glass containers; mirrors; and any bike or part that doesn't meet the rules.
On the bike course (rule 5.1): obey the event's traffic rules unless a Technical Official says otherwise; you may only make forward progress while you have your bike with you; and you must race on the bike you checked in. Dangerous riding, such as passing on the wrong side, can be penalised.
Under World Triathlon rule 7.1:
Racking your bike
Your kit
Moving through
Helmet: keep the strap unfastened while finishing the swim leg in transition. It must be fastened before you lift your bike off the rack, and stay fastened until you have re-racked the bike and let go after the ride.
Under World Triathlon rule 2.9, for age-group athletes:
Bib number:
Helmet numbers (rule 5.2): stick the helmet number stickers on the front and both sides of your helmet, unaltered, with 1.5 cm of clear space around each one. No other stickers are allowed on the helmet.
Body marking:
Only within strict limits (World Triathlon rule 2.2):
Leaving the course: if you leave the field of play for safety reasons, you must rejoin without gaining an advantage. If you do gain one, age-groupers serve a time penalty in the transition area (rule 5.1).
