Who is exempt from needing a WWC Check in a sports club?
Rule- Western Australia
- WWC Check
- Department of Communities
- Child safety
- Adults 18+
- 2026
- Volunteers
For a club or association (category 12), the Department of Communities lists these exemptions:
- Child volunteers under 18. If an under-18 does paid child-related work, they need a check.
- Unpaid students on placement under 18, for work within their course with an education provider.
- Short-term visitors to WA: limited to two weeks after first arriving, and no more than two weeks in any 12 months.
- A parent volunteering at the same club where their child is involved, or ordinarily involved (see the parent volunteer question).
- One-off national events and national tours.
- Police officers performing functions as a member of the WA Police Force.
Nobody who holds a negative notice or an interim negative notice can use the parent volunteer, child volunteer or unpaid student exemptions. People with an adverse interstate WWC decision also cannot use the parent volunteer exemption.
If you are 18 or over and not a parent volunteer at your child's club, you need a check if your usual duties involve, or are likely to involve, contact with children.
