Do I need a check to coach or manage my own child's team? What is the parent volunteer exemption?

- Volunteers
Probably not, as long as you are a parent volunteering at the club where your child is involved, or ordinarily involved. The Department of Communities' sport factsheet gives the example of a parent volunteer who coaches their child's sporting team.
Limits on the exemption:
- Same club or level. Under category 12 you are exempt only when volunteering in connection with the club or association where your child is involved. If you volunteer at a different level of the sport, such as state or national level, your child must also be involved (that is, playing) at that level.
- Not at overnight camps. The overnight camp category (category 15) includes parent volunteers, so you need a check there.
- No negative notices. Anyone with a negative notice or interim negative notice cannot use the exemption.
- Volunteers only. Whether you count as a volunteer or as paid affects which exemptions you can use, so if you are paid more than your costs, treat yourself as paid and apply for a check.
Coaches of a senior team who coach even one child need a check, unless another exemption applies.
