Every venue hosting junior matches must appoint a Ground Marshal for the duration of play. One is generally enough, but where several ovals are in use the host club must make sure all playing areas are covered.
Duties (section 30):
- inspect the playing surface and surrounds before matches to make sure the venue is set up and safe
- check required equipment is there before the first match of the day, including goal post padding, stretcher and siren
- make sure Coaches Boxes, interchange areas, spectator exclusion zones and behind-the-goals areas are clearly marked
- be the venue contact for visiting clubs, team officials and League officials, including directions to ovals, warm-up areas, change rooms and amenities
- know emergency access points, evacuation procedures and the location of first aid equipment and defibrillators
- be a visible, positive presence and help spectators and visiting clubs courteously
- carry a copy of the handbook and know the procedures for disputes
Ground marshals are not responsible for disciplinary action, sanctions, or removing people from the field or venue. De-escalate calmly and refer serious concerns to a Club Official, Team Manager, Field Umpire or League Administrator. They must be polite and not overly officious.
