Each team must supply a goal umpire with enough knowledge to do the job. They should be an adult and must not be an injured or rostered-off player from that team. Duties (section 25):
- stand where you can decide whether a goal or behind was scored
- signal a goal or behind after the Field Umpire gives the "all clear": hand signals first, then flags
- record the goals and behinds scored by each team
- compare scorecards with the opposing goal umpire and the Independent Scorer at each quarter break, and tell the Field Umpire straight away of any discrepancy
- keep the area just behind the goal line clear of spectators and obstructions
- at the end, date and sign the completed score card and hand it to the Field Umpire
- make fair, unbiased, consistent decisions, knowing the Field Umpire may overrule you
- do not enter the playing surface unless the Field Umpire instructs you, and do not coach or talk to players during play
- follow the WA Football Code of Conduct
Goal umpires are not allowed in the Coaches Box. Boundary umpires are not used in Years 3-6 because the Last Possession Rule applies.
