What is the mandatory child safety training, and who must do it?
Rule- Victoria
- Social Services Regulator
- Working with Children Check
- Adults 18+
- 2026
- Volunteers
From 19 October 2026 the training is mandatory for new Working with Children Check applicants, people renewing a clearance, and volunteers applying to change to an employee clearance.
- Existing holders do not need it immediately: you need it when you renew a clearance that expires after 19 October 2026.
- Format: online and self-paced, about 45 minutes, with six content modules. A paper version comes with the hard copy application form, and you must give the Regulator evidence you completed it.
- Cost: no extra fee. It is not scored; where a question needs a correct answer to proceed, you can try again until you get it.
- 30-day window: after completing it you have 30 days to submit your application. After that the training is withdrawn and you must do it again.
- Content: everyone's role in keeping children safe, respectful and appropriate behaviour with children, how common child abuse is, recognising concerning behaviour and grooming risk factors, and responding when you are concerned about a child's safety.
