Do I need a Working with Children Check to volunteer at a junior sports club?
Rule- Victoria
- Social Services Regulator
- Working with Children Check
- Adults 18+
- 2026
- Volunteers
You need a check if all five of these apply:
- You are an adult volunteer, paid worker or self-employed worker caring for children under 18.
- You work or care for children in one of the listed occupational fields. Cultural, recreational or sporting clubs and associations serving children or with mainly child members are listed, as is coaching specifically for children.
- Your work usually involves direct contact with children (face to face, physical, written, oral or electronic).
- Contact with children is part of your duties, not merely incidental.
- You are not exempt.
Coaching a sports team is given as an example of child-related volunteer work. A plumber working at a junior sports clubroom is the example of incidental contact that does not need a check.
Some organisations also have their own policies on who needs a check, and you need one if your organisation requires it.
