Run ahead rule (WBSC rule 1.2.3). A game ends when one team leads by:
- 15 runs after 3 innings
- 10 runs after 4 innings
- 7 runs after 5 innings
Complete innings are played unless the home team reaches the required lead while at bat. If the visiting team reaches the lead in the top half, the home team still bats in the bottom half.
Tiebreaker (rule 1.2.4). From the top of the eighth inning, and each half-inning after, the offensive team starts its turn at bat with the player scheduled to bat ninth in that half-inning placed on second base. That runner may be substituted under the substitution rules. An incorrect runner placed on second base is called out on a proper appeal, which can be made at any time while the incorrect runner is on base. If the correct runner is placed on base before a proper appeal, there is no penalty.
Australian Championships use the same start but from the top of the 10th inning the ninth batter is placed on third base (Australian Championship Regulations 17.5).
