Introducing the expedite system at the right time is the umpire's job (ITTF Statutes 2026, regulation 3.3.2.3.8; Law 2.15):
- Trigger: after 10 minutes' play in a game, or earlier at any time if both players or pairs ask. Don't introduce it if at least 18 points have been scored in that game. You or the assistant umpire time the play.
- If the ball is in play when time is reached, interrupt play (a let). Resume with service by the player who served in the interrupted rally.
- If the ball isn't in play, resume with service by the player who received in the previous rally.
- From then on: each player serves for 1 point in turn until the end of the game. If the receiving player or pair makes 13 correct returns in a rally, the receiver scores the point.
- Stroke counting: the assistant umpire or a separate official acts as stroke counter, counting the strokes of the receiving player or pair.
- Introducing it doesn't change the order of serving and receiving set for the match.
- Once introduced, it stays on until the end of the match.
