How do I qualify as an umpire or rowing official in South Africa?
Rule- South Africa
- Rowing South Africa
- RowSA Rules of Racing 2020
- Regattas
- Umpires
- All ages
- 2020/21
- Officials
Officials' accreditation is coordinated by SAROC (the South African Rowing Officials Commission) under Appendix F of the RowSA Rules of Racing.
Intermediate official. You must:
- Have normal sight and hearing (with assistance if needed).
- Attend a SAROC-approved officials' training seminar.
- Assist with duties at several regattas for at least one season.
- Pass the prescribed written examination.
National official
- After at least one further season as an intermediate official, officiating regularly (at least 20 hours in a regatta season) under national officials' supervision, your provincial officials' association or constituent member can nominate you to SAROC.
- National status can be general or for a specific discipline, and is ratified annually at the RowSA AGM.
- It lasts four years, subject to annual review. It stays valid if you do at least 20 hours of officiating at RowSA-approved regattas each season and attend at least one SAROC-approved seminar every four years, plus an update seminar after major rule changes.
- If it lapses, you must attend a seminar and show you know the current rules before SAROC renews it. SAROC can withdraw it if you don't keep up the standard.
Water safety: anyone doing on-water duties must be able to swim and stay afloat. This is your own responsibility.
At national championship and national regattas, officials on the jury must be national umpires or national officials.
